"There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, and there never will be in a Ford Administration."
Poor Jerr...it didn't help his cause much!:eyes:
I was--and remain--glad Jimmy Carter won--heck, he was the first guy I ever voted for--but Jerry Ford was the kind of guy you'd like to hang out with and have a beer. And, apparently, Tip O'Neill and a lot of other folks on our side of the aisle in the House did just that, for many years. I'll miss his soft-pedalled wit, and his propensity to drive a golf ball, with either a sharp hook or slice, into the gallery for a souvenir! I'm sure Chevy Chase will miss him, too--he helped make Chevy's career; I mean, can you imagine anyone else doing an impression of Jerry Ford!?.
I think it says volumes about both men that Jimmy Carter and Jerry Ford became good friends in later years, keeping up with each others' doings and travels on a regular basis. Dispite their disagreements on issues, they didn't let that get in the way of their common experiences in the Oval Office--or in the way of friendship. Perhaps that's the legacy of Jerry Ford; more than anything else, he fould a way, through reaching out tho those on the other side of the aisle, to work to get things done for the betterment of the nation. I suuure wish the Repub leadership in Congress--and yes, the White House--of the last several years had taken Jerry Ford's experience in that area to heart. He truly preferred unity to division, math far to fuzzy for Dub & Co. to understand.
Here's to ya, Jerr!:toast:
B-)
