1. What was the point of that appearance?
Was it to endorse Obama without doing it outright?

3. Perhaps Edwards is considering a VP slot
He did say, when Leno asked him if he'd consider a post in the next admin, "I'd like to serve my country any way I can." And, when asked if he'd run again, he said, "never say never." A run as VP?

6. No, he didn't do so expressly.
But he had to have OK'd the video they ran of Obama visiting him in NC and the doctoring up of that tape which the Tonight Show crew did showing the "quality time" he spent with Obama. It was for laughs, but seems also like a subtle nod.

what????? a subtle nod??...that is bull shit and wishful thinking..HE DID NOT ENDORSE ANYONE...it was a freaking joke...I am surprised someone is making racical slurs against Leno for showing "a black man break dancing"...

HE SPOKE HIGHLY OF BOTH CANDIDATES....

HE WAS ASKED WOULD HE CONSIDER A CABINET POSITION IN EITHER ADMINISTRATION..NOT JUST OBAMA'S

AND I PERSONALLY THINK WHEN JAY ASKED 'WILL YOU RUN AGAIN'...HE MEANT FOR PRESIDENT..NOT VEEP!

Damn you all drink Kool aid for breakfast too????

37. I mean his OK for Jay to use it during the interview.
Yes it was birdseye tape, taken just like any other snoop-copter. But do you really think Leno "sprung" it on him? That's not the way it works.

The Tonight Show staff would have said "Senator Edwards, here is some tape we'd like to use of Senator Obama visiting you in NC, and here is the comedy we'd like to develop for it." And he said "Sure, that sounds funny."

It lets everyone know that Senator Obama and Edwards recently visited socially without anyone complaining about Edwards formally endorsing him. Seems smart, media savvy, and politically astute.

I'm satisfied, and hope you are too.

46. what a puff piece of a pol
I watched Edwards last night and realized what a puff piece he is. He showed no leadership at a time when it is needed, but only wanted to feature himself. Where was his up front talk about the race card now being played, where was his discussion of McCain's slip, where was a good suggestion on what to do to avoid brokering the convention?

50. I See It Differently
I think you missed the point, you think he needs to show leadership by endorsing a candidate or attacking McCain. He wants to talk about issues - poverty, ending the war, etc. He's not really a good attack dog and that was his weakness as Kerry's VP. He didn't play it well in the last campaign, either. But that doesn't make him a puff piece of a pol

44. I didn't see an endorsement at all
I can't read anything into the fact that a clip was played. I think he should endorse given that most of his base has defected to Obama but largely I don't see that it would really matter. If you know his heart and I think most people who voted for Edwards should be able to see that he likes both candidates. He doesn't want to get into the middle of it.

My opinion... given his fervent push to rid this nation of poverty and to right many of the wrongs of this country I don't see how he doesn't endorse Obama. He may admire Clinton's tenacity but he was anti-establishment and she is very much Pro-establishment. The endorsement for Clinton would seem iffy but I've been surprised before.

His endorsement one way or another doesn't sway me. I'm an Obama supporter no matter what the case. He didn't authorize this war and that is why I support him.

Again, I cannot support anyone who used a political calculus to get us into a war that should have never been waged. I'm sticking to my guns on that one. No pun intended.

I miss both John and Elizabeth. It was great to see him again speaking on the issues.

It seems he's disappointed with how so many diversions continue to dominate over the issues, in this election. As he said, if we can stay focused on the issues, the Democratic nominee will win.

41. Missed opportunity?
I just wish that when Jay asked John about the gap between rich and poor, John could have taken the opportunity to acknowledge the devastation Nafta has had on the middle class. I believe Nafta was a deliberate move or attack on working people to keep the rich elite and corporations in power (Fascism), because poor people as a rule do not vote, you better watch out you $50,000 to $125,000 income people out there, they are coming after you now!. This is about the corporate takeover of America, they have the media, the voting machines and they hold the strings on your health care. By his answer i'm not sure John really understands the absolute deliberate planned attack on Americans by the power elite or maybe if he acknowledges this in public, he feels that it might jeopardize his future chances as president or VP. Any thoughts?????????

14. Good to see him again...
...I don't think he 'endorsed' anyone overtly or covertly. And I hope he doesn't. I think that would be very bad for him and the party.

He DID, however allude more than once to the idea of doing with the issue of poverty - what Gore did on he issue of climate change - take it outside of politics to educate people and raise awareness and to encourage activism and promote change. He mentioned a lack of political leadership on poverty just like there is a lack of political leadership on climate change. That's why Gore was able to do as much as he did. NO ONE else was doing it. That simple.

I think THAT is the direction he's leaning in. Like environmental issues have always been the cause of Gore's life (and it has - he's always been fascinated by and passionate about environmental issues and science) - the issue of poverty is the cause of John Edwards's life. I suspect JRE will endeavor to follow Gore's climate change example - in raising awareness and promoting change about poverty.

As far as public office, I think Edwards would consider any offers - but I also think that an offer would have to fit in with his plans and his chosen causes.

At any rate, it was good to see him again. I miss him and Elizabeth both. What a great family they are.

John Edwards Is Genuine Sweetheart & A Really Decent Human Being!

He would have been my first choice for President if only he'd gotten to the last round.

I'm so glad you posted this, ultraist, because I was trying to find enough stuff to make a post-worthy message of the question Jay asked him about whether the decision to run as a middle-aged white guy was a good one?! *LOL*

And the story about his son and the teacher testing his verbal abilities by asking him if he knew a story about man who stole from the rich and gave to the poor.

I thought sure he might be going to say "My Dad."

But the answer was much better and a prize gem <"Sounds like a Communist to me!"> and totally cracked me up!

Great post.

Thanks. ~*:applause:*~

23. Every time I See Him & Listen To Him I Mourn All Over & Then I Get
so extremely mad at the way OUR GOVERNMENT, the D.C. Elites and Powers That Be, simply stuck their noses into pushing the other TWO candidates to a degree that's actually Un-Democratic to me. I really have very little faith in the Democratic Party anymore and dislike what I see as time goes by.

It's such a SHAME and I can't find it in me to support the other two. I've tried, but I'm blown away by the constant bickering and nasty fighting so much that all I see that it's WIN, and HOW YOU DO IT doesn't matter anymore!

I can't stand Clinton's voice and her vitriol, and I fear that Obama isn't what has been presented. Plus, Obama with all his so called charisma may take the prize, but dollar to donuts some attempt to "off" him may in fact become a reality. I don't trust either one of them. I think Clinton has her fingers in too many pockets of high powered brokers, and hearing yesterday that she had some high roller willing to "pay" for a Re-Do in Michigan really smelled to me!

This is NOT what I was brought up to believe about America, so now I'm alone and out in left field!!!

I'm not at all impressed with leno. To me, he's a hack...the way he dealt with the writers' strike and all.

Edwards is a first class guy, and his wife is well beyond First Lady...she's a gift from heaven.

Hope he does get the VP nod, and hope he does run again.

As I've said before....no matter WHO gets the nomination...they will NEVER satisfy the greedy repug right, so they'll hound them and brand them as a loser. THEN, John can step in the next election and carry on with unraveling the mess this administration made.

And his remarks about Al Gore were right on the mark. Doing more outside of government to address climate change. So true. I suspect even Mr. Edwards knows now that is possible. I sure hope he then continues to be a voice for change regarding eliminating poverty in America regardless of where he does it, but I believe he too would actually be able to do more outside this government right now. Good interview. Glad to hear his family is doing ok. Still upset that he went one day from saying he was in this to the convention to suspending his campaign. No doubt to me why that happened.

59. I stayed up to watch Edwards last night. Sure do miss him.
I have found myself unable to support either Hillary or Obama, but I'll vote for whichever one gets the nomination.

I fear that this destructo derby in which they're engaged is going to follow the nominee into the fall campaign and we're going to end up with Pres McCain.

I do so miss Edwards.
