1. The housing mess is a federal emergency, why not FEMA?
FEMA needs to add Republican administration and Banking crises to the list of declarable emergencies.

America, how many million homeless? People need to be pounding the candidates and calling their representatives about housing the homeless in this country.

3. Because the rich ass Republicans don't have to worry about
this happening to them so they turn their heads and pretend not to see it.

SICKENING, JUST SICKENING.

Good meme, texanwitch.

It's time to call Keith Olbermann and get this onto the American airwaves. This deserves an audience.

5. Foreign media
Yeah, BBC is a good source for finding out what the American media quells. Tent cities and soup kitchens for the working man while corporate earnings soar and worker wages don't increase with their increased worker productivity.

Asian Times is often useful as well for a clearer picture on the state of the American economy.

8. With an estimate of 2,000 households losing their homes
every day in 2008, we are well above the rate of home foreclosures experienced during the republican Great Depression. I was wondering where all the people were going. I never hear about this on regular news. They should camp out on the White House lawn.

13. We might be the richest nation in the world
but these people have lost so much... and more are going to be joining them. Many more before this Bush mess and his gazillion dollar war are paid for and ended. We have aimed money at the wrong place..Iraq... when we should be rebuilding at home. Many people still have not recovered from Katrina... the Gulf and Louisiana are still in a mess... we are losing peoples' homes and people do not have health care or educational opportunities.
This is what our news should be covering... not Ferraro or Obama's former minister.

14. You aint seen nothing yet ...
Edited on Mon Mar-17-08 10:11 AM by Gonnuts
I live in New Orleans, 1 in 25 people here are homeless. Now granted this is mostly from the governments planned failure to act after Katrina plus the growing economic crisis, but what is about to happen will make all else pale in comparison.

We're heading fast into a world-wide depression that we won't pull out of until a great many of us are no longer around to see it. I'd call myself an alarmist if there wasn't so much evidence to prove this true. We've been walking towards this cliff for some time, we now have one foot off the cliff and soon the other will follow. Our rapid fall will create change of such magnitude as to challenge the continued existence of our species.

Fact: even in the best of circumstances this planet can only sustain approximately 2 billion people with a descent quality of life. We currently have over 6 billion and growing rapidly.

Fact: continued rapid lose of natural resources, habitable land, pollution, climate change and mass extinction of species will bring the number of people who can survive to 500 million, that's if we don't blow ourselves into oblivion first.

What this means is 5.5 billion of us have to find somewhere else to go. The powers that be know this and they have laid plans to ensure that if anyone is going to survive the coming purge it will be them. This is not an "if" it will happen. It will happen no matter if the powers that be plan it or not.

That time is upon us and I have no advice to anyone as to what they should do other than enjoy what you have because you won't have it for long.

23. No, not world-wide
Not where I've been the last week. Construction cranes up everywhere, new buildings going up, old ones getting a facelift. Lots of tourists spending money and keeping the restaurants open late into the night. Free language lessons for new immigrants, excellent public transportation, lots of help wanted ads in the local papers. Big emphasis on living sustainably with recycling and locally produced products. No, some places really have it together. They even re-elected the socialists to run the country last week.

17. What media? - Oh, you mean Corporate Shills?
This morning I got through on C-SPAN with an editor and journalist from the AP. I mentioned that there's a not unwarranted perception that the media in this country is now nothing more than a shill for a faux-fascist government posing as a democracy and pointed out the Sibel Edmonds case as an example. I asked if the journalist knew who I was taking about - he said he didn't, which of course floored me, because either he was lying or he's willfully ignorant. The commentator at this point asked me to elaborate and I went on to explain Sibel's case and how someone is the profession of journalism could not be aware of a case that was featured on 60 Minutes and the London Sunday Times did a three week front page article on exposing treason at the highest levels of our government and this so-called journalist professed to know nothing about it just proved my point.

Needless to say they cut me off at this point.

18. This IS NOT JUST BECAUSE of the sub-prime deal..............
...........if you all recall, this has been going on little by little for more than the past 7 yrs. This is just where we are beginning to see the effect of the last 30 yrs "trickling down". I blame Clinton (NAFTA and he IS a conservative Democrat), Bush Sr, Naturally St Ronnie, Carter (another conservative Democrat, although I like him NOW), and of course Nixon-Ford.

22. If I remember my history well enough...
Hoover was in for only a year before the great depression. All the signs were already in place when he took office though he did exacerbate them. It was Coolidge I believe who along with the bankers caused the great Depression. Hoover however took the fall as perhaps he should. Coolidge was a 100% gung ho lazafare capitalist; Hover was only about 70% comparatively guessed. Just like what is happening now; Massive amounts of paper was pumped into the markets to prop it up (roaring 20's) as massive amounts of paper have been pumped into this market for the last 5 years. The makings of market falls such as 29 and now, do not happen overnight. All the gross mismanagement has to mount up and that takes yrs for a huge economy like ours, not a few months. The tragedy of this economy has been mounting since Reagan. The treasury has been pillaged by the super rich and the war machine has gotten its share or the spoils. Granted there was a respite during the Clinton years. Republicans = disaster, Democrats = cleanup and taking falls for the pugs. It took a Roosevelt to begin the clean up after the Coolidge and Hoover disaster. If I remember my history.

30. depression, anyone?
this depression is coming on slowly. It won't be one big stock market crash or some other major event, it will be the gradual slow erosion of society.

moron* has so fucked this society and economy, that any sort of "fix" is years away. the market won't self correct for a long time to come if it ever does.

Think of this: things are bad now, but wait when gas hits 5 bucks this summer. We would still have to have a strong economy just to survive that!

he we are in the shitter. honestly, when we get hit with the one two slow motion punch coming our way ( and we see it coming, high gas prices, peak oil) how on earth are we to survive that given the the truly epic lack of action on the part of washington*?

start a garden now. get rain barrels and a water filter. learn how to solar cook.

the US now is going to look vastly different 5 years from now.
