Important you read the narrative at the beginning of this video to put this into perpective.

History repeats itself now there's another Big Fool in the White House.

1. Oh yeah
I remember Pete being on the Comedy Hour-only he didn't say "big" fool-as I recall he said "damn" fool. The latter appellation is more appropriate for Bush, I think.

2. when I was working with Pete, I probably saw him perform this . . .
thirty or more times over a period of two years . . . have some great stories about censorship, crowd reaction and such . . . wonderful memories, to be sure . . .

Pete's a personal hero, and the one who expanded my consciousness about war and about the environment . . . I treasure his friendship, and will be forever grateful for his influence in my life . . .

3. Were you aware
of this one too ? : http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1585962456964293309&q=banjo

I've got a largish collection of American Old Time Music and any videos I come across which are associated, like old footage of the Appalachians, just bring a huge smile to my face - especially if there are old folk flat footing /clogging. :toast:

11. wow! . . . thanks so much for this . . .
Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 06:36 PM by OneBlueSky
this is the first time I've ever seen Pete playing a banjo without the words around the perimeter . . . "This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender" . . . thanks again! . . . :)

one edit: screwed up the quote the first time . . . kinda mixed it with the one on Woody's guitar . . .

14. don't think so, since he's not listed in the opening credits . . .
my guess would be Baldwin Hawes, who may be related to Bess Hawes, who sang with Pete in the Almanac Singers . . .

I do know that the next performance of "John Henry" is Woody Guthrie with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee . . . that's some pretty rare footage . . .

4. With Iraq, I refer to it as "Waist deep in the Big Sandy"
...and the big fool says to push on...

9. Ther's an old saying
that goes "when you're up to arse with alligators it's difficult to remember that your intial objective was to clear
the swamp". That's the current situation in Iraq.

5. "Waist Deep" and a whole great album...link.

What can I say. Great music. This site has great oldies.

"Like the prior compilation If I Had a Hammer, this focuses a little loosely on topical songs, concentrating on (but not limited to) ones that deal with specific events. At a glance this might seem like a less essential anthology, since If I Had a Hammer contained major songs identified with Seeger like "If I Had a Hammer," "Turn, Turn, Turn," "We Shall Overcome" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone." It's actually on the same musical and lyrical level, however, and again has versions of some of the most famous tunes written or popularized by Seeger: "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," "Wimoweh," "Guantanamera," "Wasn't that a Time," Malvina Reynolds' "Little Boxes," "I Come and Stand at Every Door" and "The Bells of Rhymney" (the last two of which were covered by the Byrds in the mid-'60s). About half of these are taken from Folkways Recordings, but about half are previously unreleased live versions or studio outtakes, so from a collector's point of view this disc is pretty interesting as well. Of course with a Seeger recording, the educational and inspirational values are about as important as the musical ones, and the lesser-known songs usually also have something to make one think, whether it's a narrative of the Titanic disaster or the anti-racist "Listen Mr. Bilbo." Almost all performances were recorded in the 1950s and 1960s; three songs recorded between 1994 and 1999 find Seeger's voice fading and shaky, though his heart's intact."
