Poll question: Just out of curiosity, how many here are bilingual?
It occured to me that I have been posting under the untested assumption that most people on this board are bilingual English/Spanish.

So, humor me and sate my curiosity...

1.  My first language was Spanish and I used to translate in court.
But that was years ago and if I don't use the language, I get very rusty.

5. My Dad was a reverse migrant
Born in the US, emigrated to Mexico, obtained Mexican citizenship through my mom.

He was bilingual, and my mother a bilingual secretary. They used English to speak privately between themselves.

The first phrase I remember ever learning in English was:

"Let's go to the movies tonight"

Quite an incentive to learn the language, don't cha know...

6. multidialectal moi
absochingaolutely. several flavors. chicano, mexican, chilango. ditto el inglés, SAE, lo-SES, hippie, sales, y más. i was punished as a kid for speaking spanish on the school playground, yet assigned to translate for the monolinguals during classtime.

i speak less korean pidgin than i did whilst wearing green & i've forgotten most of my hangul phrases like "yoboseyo, dul oranjie juice" which is "howdy, i'd like 2 orange juices".

i speak more french today than i used to when studying the tongue in college. back in the 60s the university of california had a foreign language requirement that specifically excluded spanish as acceptable. that's why i studied french. then switched to classics/greek, and a modicum of latin.

thanx for asking, hay les wachamos

read! raza.
