Former labor leader Asa Trammell dies

DAPHNE, Ala. (AP) - Former state labor leader Asa Trammell died Monday in Daphne after a short illness. He was 82.

Trammell served from 1983 to 1993 as president of the state's largest labor group, the Alabama Labor Council, now known as the Alabama AFL-CIO.

In 1993, Trammell was named state labor commissioner by then Governor Jim Folsom Junior.

Born in Tampa, Florida, Trammell grew up in the Anniston area and graduated from Calhoun County High School in Oxford. He began his work with the labor council in 1963.

Trammell was a graduate of the University of Alabama and a World War II veteran.

The family will hold a wake at Daphne United Methodist Church from 6:08p.m. today. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa, with Skelton Funeral Home in Reform directing.
