http://cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_292112842.html(CBS) LOS ANGELES Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is scheduled to be in the Southland Friday to accept an endorsement from a labor union, speak at a Democratic Party dinner in Orange County and appear on a television talk show.
Edwards will be endorsed by the California State Council of the Service Employees International Union, which represents about 656,000 workers in health care, public services and property services. Although the union declined to make a national endorsement, 10 of its state chapters, representing half of its members, have endorsed Edwards.
"California SEIU members know that John Edwards will be the best labor president in the history of the United States," Sal Roselli, president of the SEIU State Council, said earlier this week in announcing its endorsement of Edwards.
"His proposals are far and away the best among the candidates on the issues that matter most to working Americans. Edwards has taken principled stands on workers' behalf, when others took more cautious positions on issues that demand bold action."
Edwards, who represented North Carolina in the U.S. Senate for one term, said he was honored to have the union's support.
"SEIU is at the forefront of the fight to make work pay and provide economic security to hardworking families," Edwards said. "I have proudly stood with them on the frontlines of the fight for working Americans for years. Together, I believe we can fix the broken system in Washington that has been rigged by corporate interests and we can make this country work for regular Americans again."
