Work Stoppage Likely on Broadway Today
New Yorkers are encouraged to stop by the Local 1 hall and buy a hat or shirt if you can, very reasonable($15), or
just to say hello and show support. :)

The workers who make Broadway light up and inspire millions are facing a lockout today in New York.

IATSE Local 1, the union representing these hard workers, and the League of American Theatre Producers, which represents a majority of Broadway’s producers and theatre owners, exchanged final offers late last night – the last step before a lockout could occur.

If the league declares a lockout, it could start immediately or after a period of several days -- and according to an article in the NY Times, it would affect all the shows on Broadway except for four – “Mary Poppins,” “Pygmalion,” “Mauritius” and “The Ritz.”

This lockout would mark the second work stoppage on Broadway in less than five years. In 2003 the musicians’ union strike lasted four days – and that strike was the first in 30 years that shut Broadway down due to a labor dispute.
