Japan's Toyota union to accept contract assembly-line workers - report

TOKYO, Oct. 3, 2007 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- The labour union of automaker Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) Workers plans to start accepting contract factory workers at Toyota Motor Corp from next summer, the Nikkei reported on Thursday.

The automaker is likely to agree to the union's proposal, the business daily said, without citing sources.

Contract factory workers are usually employed under four-to-six month contracts that can be renewed up to a maximum term of two years and 11 months, it said.

The automaker now has some 9,200 such workers, nearly triple the level at the end of 2001, the report said.

The union plans to initially welcome about 2,000 to 3,000 seasonal workers and will consider measures to encourage veteran temp workers at Toyota to join, it said.
