Recommend this in support of public employees

Good to read an article like this for a change.
More accurate than the corporate crap spewing from the airwaves.

Public employees don't just "believe they are being scapegoated". They know they are.
Just turn on AM radio talk, FAUX, and the other so-called news and information programs on radio and TV. It's right there to see and hear.

In defense of public employees: Do you know who I am?
BY ERIC JOHNSON
THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 2011 AT MIDNIGHT

Two members of a San Diego city work crew smooth out freshly poured asphalt to repair a bumpy road.
Many public employees believe they are being scapegoated in the debate over government budget woes.

I am the scourge of the modern era. I have been verbally assaulted in the local and national media. My utter existence has all but been criminalized. I have been accused of causing the budget shortfalls of every municipal and state government in the nation.

Who am I? I am your dedicated and hardworking municipal employee, now retired. What have I done to earn all of this notoriety? Nothing less than spend 36 years of my life working for you as a public works employee with a local municipality.

I am the one you saw maintaining your park and open space areas so you could enjoy your picnics, barbecues and outdoor weddings in a safe, healthy and pleasing environment. I maintained your athletic fields so you and your families could participate in your favorite sports. I am the one who swept and maintained your streets, and installed the road signs and signals so you could negotiate through your fine city and arrive safely.

1. Everyone praised our cops and firemen on 9/11.
We damn near worshiped them.

But the sanitation people cleaned that endless re-coating of ash out of every inch of Lower Manhattan. Do any of you even imagine what kind of job that was? The buildings smoldered for weeks. Below Canal Street it looked like a sick version of Santa's Village. Everything covered with white stuff that wasn't cold.

Lower Manhattan wouldn't have been habitable without the efforts of our "public employees." Nobody talks about their health issues. They just did the work. Day in, day out, scrubbing till the Wall Street bankers could safely return.

You'd think there would be some residual gratitude.
