A Sarpy County judge has rejected the City of Bellevue's attempt to back out of a collective bargaining agreement that includes improved retirement benefits for police officers.

District Judge Max Kelch's ruling, released Tuesday, says the city must honor the terms of its 2006 contract with police officers.

City Administrator Gary Troutman had argued that some of the police retirement provisions conflicted with state laws governing first-class cities like Bellevue. Troutman maintained that the city was unaware when it negotiated the contract that the pension benefits were more generous than the state allowed.

The judge said that even so, the city has to honor the contract.
