MUSKOGEE, OK -- A former president of the American Federation of Government Employees union has been sentenced to a year and one day in prison.

Fifty-one-year-old Daniel Gibson of Sallisaw was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty in March to a felony charge of making false statements. U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling says Gibson falsified two receipts in an effort to justify about $35,000 in unauthorized expenses charged to the union.

Sperling says the charge came after a U.S. Department of Labor audit found that numerous checks were written to credit card companies although the union had no credit cards. He says Gibson submitted the false receipts in 2008 in an effort to justify the payments.

Gibson is to report to the Bureau of Prisons by August 17.
