Labor welcomes President Obama’s recess appointment of Dr. Don Berwick to direct the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The AFL-CIO says there is no better person than Dr. Berwick to head the federal medical programs and to lead the effort to transform the medical system. The labor federation says despite Republican partisan attacks, working families are pleased to join the long list of those endorsing him. SEIU President Mary Kay Henry says Obama’s appointment of Berwick demonstrates that the president understands how important Medicaid and Medicare are to working families. SEIU says Dr, Berwick has earned labor’s respect for his abilities to cut inefficiencies while improving patient care. SEIU says labor can’t let the Republican blocking tactics unravel the social safety net.
