10 June 2010

COON RAPIDS - Nurses are walking picketlines at 14 hospitals across the Twin Cities. View 3 videos and many more photos at link.

RN Tammy Lindstad (left), Lakeville, who has worked 24 years at Minneapolis Children's Hospital: "I love my job and I love taking care of the babies. I believe in order to do the best job, I need a good contract and that contract needs to have language about safe patient care." With her is RN Michel Jepson, Woodbury, who has worked 29 years at Minneapolis Childrens Hospital.

Strikers wore red MNA union shirts. Hundreds walked the picketline at each hospital, including this group at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

3. Health care workers are among the groups most in need
of having Union representation. So many work at the whim of marginally competent administrators - especially in long term care facilities.

5. Strong unions too
I am a member of a very weak union. It's better than nothing but not much better, really. Their negotiating strategy (and I was part of the renegotiation team) was, in the vernacular of dog training, show belly. Very weak walking in to negotiations and surprisingly (not) a rather poor contract ensued. It was better than I expected but not nearly as good as it could have been. I'm hoping the national nurses union takes off. I will join and pay dues happily.
