I never use this type of tactic in a conference when I represent my crew as their union steward. It is unprofessional. I was in new territory. I knew I was right. The employee followed written procedures. They were going to reprimand him for following policy. I lost it. I've never done this before. The foreman next door had to be really wondering what got me so mad. After I cooled down, I continued with the defense of my crew member. I told the manager to take it to the next level. I will also file a hostile work environment charge with personnel. I will win and kick your butt. Then I'll drag it in the parking lot in front of the entire plant. End of meeting. After management huddled together, they knew I was right AND pissed for having to point out their policy. Usually I quote our contract. We got a written apology from management in 10 minutes with a pledge to never unjustly question my interpretation of badly written policy. I got high five and hugs from my crew at late break. Some days it feels so good to know my crew stands with me. The letter hangs in the union bulletin board, locked behind glass for ALL to see.
