As they add members in one front the Teamsters are losing members elsewhere. At a rally to support keeping the Toyota-GM NUMMI plant open in California ,Teamsters Car Hauler Director Fred Zuckerman, told reporters the union has lost about 7,000 car hauler jobs.

: “We’re down, probably 5,000 workin’ right now out of the 12,000.”

Zuckerman says Toyota is not alone in turning to non-union car haulers.

: “All of ‘em are, actually. In fact, we had a campaign against General Motors. They reversed a lot of their decisions that kept our guys doin’ the work. Ford Motor company has not done that. I think we have a good agreement with Ford Motor company that they’re not going to go in that direction.”

Five thousand UAW jobs will be lost when Toyota closes the NUMMI plant. Zuckerman says 1500-2000 Teamster car hauler jobs will also be lost in that plant closing.
