State workers in Florida are being forced to deal with their personal information being at risk in what has become a common problem for the Information Age. Jesse Russell reports:
Two laptops stolen from Florida’s largest health care provider has put the personal information of more than 40,000 current and former state employees in danger. In addition to the state worker the computers are said to contain the names, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, and health information on nearly 200,000 people. AvMed Health Plans said the two laptops were reported missing from the company’s office in Gainesville on December 11, but they have just started mailing out notices to subscribers last week. AvMed isn’t the only health care company to face the theft of subscriber data this year. BlueCross Blue Shield reported 57 hard drives containing conversations between customers and service representatives were stolen from a closet.
