Lede: Despite the huge electoral setback for Democrats in the Massachusetts Senate race, the AFL-CIO still says it expects the Employee Free Choice Act to pass this year. Doug Cunningham reports.

By Doug Cunningham

AFL-CIO Legislative Director Bill Samuel says even though Democrats no longer have a veto-proof majority n the U.S. Senate, the labor federation doesn’t believe the Employee Free Choice Act labor law reform is dead.

: “No we don’t see it being dead. We’re obviously re-evaluating our strategy and looking at the timing to take up the Employee Free Choice Act. But we have no intention of backing off that commitment. And I think the same can be said of the congressional leadership and the White House. They see this as a fundamental part of our economic agenda – restoring fairness to workers. And we see that happening this year, and that’s our plan.”

Would newly elected Republican senator Scott Brown be willing to consider the Employee Free Choice Act?

: “We really don’t know the answer to that. I’m not familiar with his record in Massachusetts. Some people have called him a moderate. I don’t know if that’s the case. If he is, he should be open to these arguments. Other senate Republicans with moderate background have been willing to talk about this. We’ve had good conversations with a number of moderates. We intend to continue to have those and to open up that dialogue with Scott Brown.”

5. If you don't hear a peep mentioned about it
in the SOTU address, you can conclude it is dead. It takes leadership to get laws passed.
