NLRB to hear union case against Morrell (Latham hotel)

The National Labor Relations Board has scheduled a hearing on allegations that the Latham hotel owned by Jim Morrell fired employees for trying to form a union.

The hearing is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2010 at the Leo. W. O’Brien Federal Building in Albany, N.Y.

Former employees say they were fired from the Holiday Inn Express in Latham, N.Y., for trying to form a union.

The three former workers say they represented half of an organizing committee that approached Morrell on April 23 about forming a union with Workers United Local 471. They say they were fired 24 hours later.

Morrell said he hasn’t received word from the NLRB about the hearing. His lawyer, John Higgins of Nixon Peabody, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The NLRB’s acting regional director, Paul J. Murphy, said his office investigated four or five charges in April, speaking with all sides.
