Workday Minnesota reporting from Pittsburgh
13 September 2009

PITTSBURGH - Workday Minnesota is in Pittsburgh this week to report on the issues facing working people -- and the labor movement's plans for addressing everything from the economic crisis and health care to the future for young workers.
Workday editor Barb Kucera, Minneapolis Labor Review editor Steve Share and St. Paul Union Advocate editor Michael Kuchta are attending the national AFL-CIO convention, as is University of MInnesota Labor Education Service Director Howard Kling.

The AFL-CIO is holding its first national convention in four years -- and the first since 2005 when several unions split to form another labor federation, Change to Win. For the first time in 14 years, delegates will elect a new leadership team for the AFL-CIO, placing Mine Worker Richard Trumka in the presidency to replace John Sweeney, who is retiring.

But it's the challenges facing working people -- especially the struggles of families across the country -- that will dominate discussion as union members in construction, education, government, manufacturing, transportation and other industries meet for the five-day event at the Pittsburgh Convention Center.
