Today in labor history June 14 Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison

June 14

June 14, 1908 - The Theatrical Stage Employees International Alliance held its national convention in Minneapolis, with American Federation of Labor President Samuel Gompers attending and giving a speech.

June 14, 1964 - Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison in South Africa. His imprisonment became a rallying point for anti-apartheid activists around the world. In 1986, for example, on the 22nd anniversary of his sentencing, some 60,000 people demonstrated in New York City to call for sanctions against South Africa. After his release in 1990, Mandela credited the worldwide divestiture movement as a key force behind the changes that have taken place in South Africa.
