from the YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC:

Carpenters union members picket in Yakima

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. — Members of Carpenters Union Local 770 are conducting informational picketing this week at the site of the new Wal-Mart store on West Nob Hill Boulevard over a wage issue.

The picketing targets Paras Concrete of Spokane, a firm that specializes in concrete construction. The union contends Paras is paying carpenters who prepare concrete forms below prevailing wages.

Paras officials said Thursday the allegation is not true.

Owner Jim Paras said in a news release that the company coordinated the picketing effort in an attempt to organize Paras carpenters, a charge the union denies.

Eric Franklin, communications director for the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, said the pay structure is about a third of the overall benefit package carpenters in the area receive.
