The next time you read negative things about unions, here's something to think about. More than one observer has noted the successful emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on New York's Hudson River was more than a miracle. It was a combination of skilled workers who helped make it a miracle.
Everyone involved in this endeavor was a member of organized labor. Pilot Chesley B. Sullenberger III is a member of the U.S. Pilots Association and a former chairman of the safety committee for the Airlines Association.
The flight crew are members of the Communication Workers of America. Air traffic controllers are members of the National Association of Air Controllers. Ferry crews belong to the Seafarers International. Firefighters and police are members of their respective unions. The list goes on.
Basically, everyone involved in the flight and the rescue operation were union members.
Organized labor continuously strives to make sure its members are trained properly and have the best equipment available. Organized labor works to ensure its members are prepared for the various emergencies they are called upon to confront.
I firmly believe a miracle did happen on the Hudson River, one with the union label on it.
