PLANO – A Dallas man was charged with murder Thursday after a fight broke out at a commercial day-labor office and another man was shot and killed.
Derrick Love, 37, was arrested in the death of Michael Lopez, 39, of Plano. Both men were waiting for jobs early Thursday at Labor Ready on Park Boulevard near Jupiter Road, authorities said.
Love was being held at the Plano Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
About 15 people were inside the office about 5:30 a.m. when Love and Lopez began arguing for unknown reasons. That's when police say Love pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Lopez.
"It is amazing that no one else got hurt," said Officer Rick McDonald, Plano police spokesman.
During the shooting, a Labor Ready employee helped people hide behind a counter to avoid the gunfire, then pressed an alarm button that alerted police, authorities said. Meanwhile, the gunman fled.
