RI, Michigan lead the nation in unemployment 9.3%

Rhode Island and Michigan lead the nation in unemployment during the ongoing recession.

Both states reported seasonably adjusted unemployment rates of 9.3 percent in October. Results released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that Rhode Island and Michigan had the worst unemployment rate of any state in the country.

A dozen states reported unemployment rates above 7 percent.

Michigan has been hit hard by job losses in the troubled auto industry. Like Michigan, Rhode Island also has suffered from long-term losses in the manufacturing industry and been hurt by the subprime mortgage crisis.
