Pennsylvania's Employment Situation: July 2008
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's
seasonally adjusted civilian labor force -- the number of people working or
looking for work -- fell to 6,365,000 in July, a decrease of 30,000 from
June. Resident employment was down 38,000 from a month earlier, while
unemployment was up 8,000. The labor force was up 78,000 since July 2007,
with both employment and unemployment up over the year.

Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose two-tenths of
a percentage point in July to 5.4 percent. The United States' rate was also
up two-tenths of a percentage point in July, rising to 5.7 percent. The
state rate has been below the national rate for three consecutive months.

The state and national rates were up 1.1 percent and 1.0 percent,
respectively, from July 2007.

Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs count fell by
1,600 in July to 5,803,800. Goods-producing industries were down a combined
1,800 jobs in July, while the service-providing industries set a record
high of 4,882,500 jobs.

Pennsylvania's jobs count was down 500 from July 2007. Since January
2003, the state has added 178,100 jobs.
