Hospitals ordered to rehire some workers
http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/stories/2007/04/23/daily33.htmlThe new owner of the two former St. Francis hospitals will have to rehire some of the 85 unionized employees it laid off in February, an arbitrator has ruled.
Hawaii Medical Center laid off 210 of its 1,600 workers in an effort to reduce operating losses when it bought the hospitals.
Hawaii Medical Center CEO Danelo Canete said in a statement Tuesday that he is "very pleased" with the arbitrator's decision and welcomed the return of the reinstated employees.
"We are delighted with the arbitrator's decision, even though we did not prevail on every issue," Canete said. "The arbitrator confirmed our position that HMC was within its legal and contractual rights to restructure our workforce to become medically excellent and financially viable."
The 85 employees are members of the Hawaii Teamsters and Allied Workers Local 996 union. The Teamsters filed a grievance in February alleging that HMC violated its collective bargaining agreement and its promise not to lay off any employees for one year.
