The Most Beautiful Magazine Cover ever.
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 01:05 PM by FLDem5

I was at my local grocery store and saw this at the check out and caught my breath.

There are many artists out there that will (and probably should) disagree with me, but it is my opinion.

The general theme and faces on the cover made my heart sing, as well as the stunning Julia Roberts as mother nature.

Just wow. I bought it and can't wait to read it. RFK Jr. is aging SO well.

17. Somewhere I heard/read that when
you see several "famous" people together in a photo like that, each person is usually photographed separately and the photo compiled later. It seems that it is like herding cats to get that many famous folks together in the same place and at the same time for one photo. So maybe Julia was all by herself for that photo.

4. It's pretty ...
I would not have choosen Julia Roberts though, i.e., Mother Nature needs a little bit more meat on her bones to survive those brutal winters. ;)

But the entire theme was quite fetching. :-) :hi:

I'm partial to the current Rolling Stone cover, myself. That is really a thing of beauty! But my opinion is probably based in the fact that I think Julia Roberts is considerably less than "stunning." She does nothing for me whatsoever. Nothing.

15. Al Gore 2008: First Environmental President!
From the website:

"Al Gore became the unlikely “It boy” of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, thanks to Davis Guggenheim’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which follows the former vice president on his relentless worldwide quest to expose the grave truth about climate change. But the fight against global warming is nothing new for Gore, who has made the environment a key part of his life for more than 25 years. Gore faced ridicule in the 2000 presidential campaign for pushing the idea of hybrid cars, and forged ahead with the Kyoto Protocol talks even after aides warned it was an unpopular move. Now, the Bush administration’s negligence toward our planet is facing one consequence it didn’t foresee: the unleashing of Gore’s anger, passion, wisdom, and intellect, untethered by advisers. Inside the issue, Gore’s essay, “The Moment of Truth,” explores the danger of the climate crisis, as well as the unprecedented opportunities it presents. Gore asks, “So why is it that our leaders seem not to hear such clarion warnings? Are they resisting the truth because they know that the moment they acknowledge it they will face a moral imperative to act? Is it simply more convenient to ignore the warnings?” Furthermore, he writes, “Where there is a blinding lack of situational awareness, the people perish..."

29. Run - do not walk - to your nearest store and get the issue
before it sells out. Every page is a joy. You can skip the Hollywood gossip by whatshisname, overlook all of the "beautiful people" at the Oscar party and avoid all of the glamorous people ads and just read the articles. Pure 24K gold. From the editor's letter to the Michael Wolff's Words Fail Him contribution on Snotty Scotty McPuffymoonface's failure in the Press Room, to Gore's article , to the Hall of Fame article by James Wolcott who writes about NASA scientist James Hansen who stood up to the right to speak the truth about global warming. There is even an in depth article on the The Raping of Appalachia that discusses Chucklenuts' allowing the mining industry to destroy small towns (I know, surprise, surprise.)

And I believe that the cover photo is not photo-shopped - read that inside somewhere.

I subscribed to Vanity Fair over a year ago for the comprehensive attention they give to their articles. No fluff, hit and run work - each piece a gem.

And damn proudly.

Good on ya, Al Gore. The fucking vipers in the Main Stream Media tried to cut you at the knees in 2000, and you still received 500,000 more votes than their matinee idol Mr. Bush, and you won Florida to boot. Fucking skells should have to eat every last disaster they helped create. Lock box...haha what a joke they made of it...lock box...haha. Now, 400 billion in to deficit later, do they dare comment again on the lock box, or the earth tones? Do they fucking dare?

61. Vanity Fair published an epic length Bush expose
by Gail Sheehey during the presidential campaign of 2000. Laying out in gory detail the horribleness and awfulness of his performance as Texas governor. The article could not have made it more clear that if Bush were elected we would be fucked. Although even Ms. Sheehy couldn't have predicted just how badly. Aside from the infamous post-911 "Bush at War" cover story I don't recall this fluffing. As a regular reader of VF I actually found G.Carter's editorials one of the few places outside the Internets where I could turn for some pretty consistently anti-Bush diatribes, dating back to before it became the national pastime.
