What do libertarians propose to replace public schools with?
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 11:47 AM by T Roosevelt
I've surfed a couple of libertarian blogs recently (Christploitation was one) and this statement (among others) jumped out at me:

Many posts on Vox’s blog include statements such as: “Close the public schools now!” “No more public schools.” “I don’t believe in teaching any subject in the public schools.” While I agree wholeheartedly that the public schools should all be shut down immediately, ...

Just what to they propose to take the place of the public schools? A series of private schools? Because if you take that road to its endpoint you'll end up with a single public school system.

13. Feudal parents with no money and no power
would have to set up the schools for their children, hire the teachers, and maintain the system.

Or they could leave the children uneducated.

Whatever, the sainted rich should not be troubled by the educational needs of the rabble.

4. If you do away with public school magical capitalism fairies will...
...place scholarships to Ivy league prep schools under the pillows of all little children.

Or at least that's how they explained it to me.

5. The schools' physical plants are worth...
.. billions and billions. The privatizers would LOVE to get their hands on those facilities. They sure as hell could make a profit from running the schools if they could just get the buildings for free or cheap when the schools are "shut down". All they have to do is break the schools... cut off the money... and pick up the facilities at the bankruptcy sale.

That's one of my objections to the charter schools. It seems they just pick up the buildings for the cost of upkeep.

6. yes, private schools

a for profit school system would be far more efficient :sarcasm: It would save some money on taxes but everyone would be stupid and this country would go down the crapper immediately - it's kind of a trade off!

These people's minds have been so poisoned with RW rhetoric. Statements like "schools are just factories for turning out good little liberals." I guess teaching children to get along with people of all different religions and races is just way over the top if you're a right wing crazy person. They seem to also think that public schools have first graders putting condoms on zucchinis and watching "Johnny Has Two Daddy's" all day. And of course people hate paying property taxes. You know how some people are with taxes :eyes: Why don't they just quit their job and live out on the corner in a fucking cardboard box, then they wouldn't have to worry about taxes. assholes

11. Great rant
And, yes, having no public school system would result in a stupid general population. That's the plan. Its what they want.

16. Using my public school education to analyze the following.
"schools are just factories for turning out good little liberals." The majority of people have a public school education, this is a given.

If the above statements are true, then the Republican party must be liberal because they are in charge. No, you say it's not true!

Then the public schools are obviously not good at what they do and the students are rejecting their education anyway, so the public schools must be closed.

7. Ignorance
Makes sense- you pretty well have to be ignorant (at least about economics, ecology and history) to be a libertarian. Maybe they just want more people around like they are.

8. Child labor
if the parents can't afford private schools, then the kids go to work.

On the job training. It's the American way.

10. They don't want to replace them; they just want to destroy them
They believe that the govt should not be involved in educating our kids. It's that each one take care of their own philosophy.

12. Nothing for the poor, and private schools for the rich.
What could be better than a huge mass of ignorant, illiterate poor people to support the lifestyles of the wealthy? Who needs to read in order to clean a pool or mow a five acre lawn? In fact, knowing how to read would get in the way -- then they could find out how oppressed they are.

The people who want the end of public schools *honestly* believe if a kid is in a family who can't educate him themselves or pay for a private school, tough shit for him.
