Because if he doesn't remember CAP, he's either saying he didn't really want to join (LIE) or he put it on his application in '85 to curry favor with Reagan (i.e., he LIED in filling that form out).

31. "Alito recognizes right to privacy", says Reuters.
http://today.reuters.com/news/NewsArticle.aspx?type=domesticNews&storyID=2006-01-10T150615Z_01_KWA606962_RTRUKOC_0_US-COURT-ALITO.xml

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, who voiced opposition to abortion as a Reagan administration lawyer two decades ago, testified on Tuesday the Constitution protects the right to privacy, a key underpinning of the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.

In the first round of questioning at his Senate confirmation hearing, President George W. Bush's 55-year-old conservative nominee also voiced respect for legal precedent.

"I do agree that the Constitution protects a right to privacy," Alito told Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, a moderate Pennsylvania Republican and defender of abortion rights.

Alito was not immediately asked how he would rule on abortion if confirmed to the high court. But like previous nominees, he was expected to say he would not respond about cases that might come before the Supreme Court.

Folks, this isn't a hearing to the Repunks, it's just another Rovian campaign where we're being made the heels for their unwashed and brain-dead followers. That ALONE shows how far they are going to go to get this apparatchik in the Supreme Court.

Call your reps and get your relatives to do the same.

44. In case you don't know about CAP
http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/archives/2005/11/18/news/13876.shtml

<snip>

Earlier this week, recently released documents drew attention for showing that, in a 1985 job application, Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito '72 wrote that he is "particularly proud" of his work on cases arguing that "racial and ethnic quotas should not be allowed and that the Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion."

Now, opponents to his nomination are using another piece of information from those documents to suggest he is far outside the mainstream in his political and social views: Near the end of his "Personal Qualifications Statement" for a high-level job in Ronald Reagan's Justice Department, Alito wrote that he was "a member of the Concerned Alumni of Princeton University, a conservative alumni group."

Interviews with several alumni who were students in the 1970s paint a picture of Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP) as a far-right organization funded by conservative alumni committed to turning back the clock on coeducation at the University.

The group, which published a magazine in which students wrote nostalgically about the days before coeducation, was frowned upon by Nassau Hall. Some alumni expressed surprise at Alito's association with CAP, but at least two suggested he might have put it on the 1985 job application to appeal to a personal connection in the Reagan administration.

======================================================================
Now, he doesn't remember?

Misinfo - Usually recusal is not a requirement. That was Scalio's arguement why it was ok to hunt with people who had cases coming before the SC.

Sounds like Alito recuses himself when he doesn't have to, but refuses when he should.

actually 'listening' to Hatch when it became his turn. Had to hit the mute button like a game show contestant though after about 3 seconds. Now I'll drink my coffee and read what you people are saying till Kennedy comes up. Ahhhh all is well. :)

80. Has DiFi asked him about his views on "States Secret" privilege usage?
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 11:04 AM by calipendence
I sent an email to her yesterday that I wanted her to quiz him on this and how he felt about this being used in court cases as it has been done in so many cases to help in this administration's coverups, since the current Supreme Court won't tell us why they aren't hearing these cases as late as the case they ruled on in this fashion yesterday...

I said that I'm now a one issue voter and will only vote for pols that will seek to have all facets of the government to give us the truth! Hope this and Alito's positions on presidential power in "adding" comments to their signing of bills will prompt her to go down this route and not just look at the abortion issue, which I also want to have prevented as well, but this is not my sole concern, and it is not just this issue that will win over other support in congress to vote against this bum.

frowning when the tough questions came up.

You have a nice pic of the Capitol Hill on one screen, then there's a dandy shot of the Supreme Court bldg. Aother screen captures Orin Hatch as he's asking Alito softball questions. "Split the screen in to six different images" you can just hear the CNN director saying.:eyes:

97. Lehey deserves kudos for using the "immigrant family" stuff
One thing the right wing likes to do is gloss over the substance of someone because they have a "great story."

In this case, they are trying to use Alito's immigrant background to make him seem "special" and eroic for overcoming the odds. A Real American Success Story.....nd by implication, to tar opponents as elitists.

At frst I thought lehey was being a bit of a blowhard by talking about his own immirant family. But then I realized he was turning the tables on Alito, by making it clear that many people have a "great story" and Alito can;t use that as a protective shield.
