Bush Wore Wire for Alito Remarks
Bush Wore Wire for Alito Remarks
Submitted by davidswanson on Tue, 2006-01-10 00:31. Impeachment
On Monday morning, Bush spoke a total of 250 words to the media on behalf of Sam Alito.

Even though it was a trivially short speech, filled with talking points he's recited many times before - and even though Bush was wide awake in the best hour of his day - Bush couldn't even deliver those 250 words without waiting for most of it to be fed to him through his earpiece!!!

Here's the word-by-word analysis, breaking down the video from BradBlog, which begins with the fourth sentence from Bush's remarks.

To show the operation of the earpiece, I start a new line with each pause. I invite you to play the video while reading my notes to double-check my conclusions.

By my count, Bush was fed 29 soundbites through his earpiece to deliver the 216 words below - that's less than 8 words per soundbite.

That low ratio may be because the earpiece was malfunctioning, as evidenced by several extremely noticeable breakdowns in Bush's delivery that led to phrases of just one, two, or three words.

Let's begin...

Sam Alito is

eminently qualified to be a-a member of the bench.

I-I'm not the only person who feels that way --

the American Bar Association looked at his record, looked at his opinions, looked at his temperament,

and came to the same conclusion, that he is

well qualified

to be a Supreme Court judge.

Sam's

got

the intellect necessary to

to bring

a lot of class

to that Court.

He's got a judicial temperament necessary to make sure that

that the Court

is a- is a- is a- is a body that interprets the law and doesn't try to write the law.

And so I'm looking forward to your hearings.

I know the American people will be impressed,

just like I have been impressed and a lot of other members of the Senate have been impressed.

And my hope, of course, is that the

the American people will be impressed by the process.

It's very important that members of the Senate

conduct a dignified hearing.

The Supreme Court is a dignified body; Sam is a dignified person. And

my hope, of course, is that the Senate

bring dignity to the process

and give this man a fair hearing

and an up or down vote on the Senate floor.

Sam, good luck to you. Thanks for your agreement to serve. I appreciate you. Thank you.

So there it is, word by trivial word. Unless he's completely reckless, Bush must have practiced it a couple of times. Yet even so he couldn't deliver it without Karl Rove feeding it into his ear.

When will the Washington Press Corps report that the most powerful man in the world is too fucking stupid to deliver 250 simple well-rehearsed words without an earpiece??????

1. Beautiful. That's how every transcript of that moron should be presented
broken and filled with awkward, inappropriate pauses.

Just like he speaks.

2. If they fed him those lines, they need new feeders
It was one of the most stumbling, halting deliveries of his illustrious career giving stumbling, halting speeches. You can see Bush doesn't know shit about Alito or the job he is nominating for. He's just doing what he's told...Oswald Cobblepot, er, Dick Cheney, vetted Alito in order to make sure they had someone who'd keep their sorry asses out of jail. Bush is too clueless to even do his own research.

6. Have you seen this:

That is the bulge he was sporting this December when he was attempting to justify warrantless wiretaps of Americans.

Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 08:50 AM by CottonBear
yet he is always saying it. it's some sort of mindless filler when his wire isn't working. :(
I don't like Alito at all, but he looked embarassed to be standing next to DimSon. :(

12. What was that "shh" thing?
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 09:23 AM by soonerhoosier
"and came to the same conclusion, that he is (shp)

well qualified "

THAT was bizarre. Was he about to say a word that began with "sh" or was he "shusshing" somebody... akin to the phantom "let me finish" during the debate when no one was trying to stop him?

Watch the video.

13. Maybe it was just . . .
. . . static on the device? "shp" if you say it out loud, does sound a lot like static.

14. I'll look at the video again, but...
after watching it 2-3 times, I sure thought that the "shp" came from Chimpy's mouth.

17. Sorry, that's what I meant!
That there was static on his earbud that sounded like "shp" so * said "shp" along with the static.

21. not only funny . . .
. . . but really scary. I somehow think I'm right on this. Can't for the life of me imagine why someone would say "shp" in the middle of a speech.

I was thinking that, too.

PROMPTER: Sam is the kind of man..
BUSH: Sam's the kinna man...
PROMPTER: who won't make rash decisions on the court.
BUSH: who'll brin a lotta class to the court.
PROMPTER: NO!
BUSH: no. Uh. I KNOW that.
TRANSMISSION STATIC.
BUSH: Shhhp. Bzzzzzz.
FM RADIO INTERFERENCE
BUSH: I am the morning DJ on WOLD.

25. Seems real
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 12:01 PM by Richard D
In the article at afterdowning, it's mentioned that the reason for all of the pauses could have been that the earbud was malfunctioning. All the more reason for static.

when it could have made a difference??

Even Charlie Gibson asked Bush about it...

19. They're all being such hypocrites
They're specifically supporting Alito because of his positions on abortion and overturning Roe V Wade which is my understanding writing laws. Give me a freakin break! And of course Bush is wearing an earpiece. When does he not wear one? Remember in the first or third debate with Kerry where he out of nowhere said "let me finish"? Nobody was talking and it was his turn to go and he blurted it out of nowhere. I'll never forget that because of the look on Kerry's face.

26. That "shhp" is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen.
Watch it if you haven't already. It comes at the 25 second mark.

It really does look as if he said "shhp" deliberately. He turned his head and emphasized it.

The most logical explanation would be that he got tongue-tied... that maybe he was searching for a word that began with "s" or "sh"... but it does not look that way.
