How low can Michelle Malkin get?
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/004974.htm

Because she doesn't like anti-war protesters, she posted the personal contact information of those students at UC Santa Cruz that DARED protest military recruiters being on campus. Now I don't mind her having her own opinion, but posting personal information is as low as a human being can go. Now those students are receiving death threats,(http://saw.revolt.org/node/51), and Malkin, who was politely asked to remove the personal information from her site, post the the information again!

So if you really care about what Malkin has done, please contact her and ask POLITELY to remove the offending information and apologize to the protesters. I've already done so, And I want to see how many people follow my lead.

1. Why don't you just report her to the proper law enforcement?
There has got to be a law against this. Maybe the ACLU can help.

gathered through a city directory, the Internet or a student directory.

While I find Malkin evil and despicable, she didn't publish any information that couldn't be gathered somewhere else by anyone searching for that type of information. We cannot restrict this information, less we become as secretive and restrictive as BushCo. If any of these students wanted their info kept private, they could have opted for private phone numbers or asked to be left out of the directory. She just put all the information in one place, actually.

It's an information age.

That said, I think she's a low-down, dirty bitch for compiling this info to give her freaky readers another venue for spewing their hate, but it's not against the law.

I think there is a law against this. She abused the fact that she has a high public profile to hurt people she disagrees with. My personal information is in the public domain also, but nobody has a picture of me to identify with my personal information and they aren't publishing it all over the place.

Anyway, I have found out that by calling various law enforcement agencies when I felt I was wronged that they will tell you what the law is in their jurisdiction and if they can't help, try an ACLU lawyer. They can advise you what your rights are in this matter. I believe you do have rights.

45. A death threat is illegal ~ if the threats came in email, the senders
should be easy to find and prosecute.

She could be sued, imo, for encouraging the harming of another person. What was the purpose of posting personal info if it wasn't to facilitate what happened? Let her answer in court! Even they lose, it'll cost her financially. These people don't respond to 'polite' requests, they laugh at them.

The students should get together and file a lawsuit against her, and the perpetrators need to be prosecuted and then sued. This type of behavior needs to get a strong reaction. They've gotten away with their cowardly and imo, dangerous behavior for way too long.

23. To some extent, it's the students' own fault...
...they're the ones who put out the contact information on a press release, thus making it public information.

That doesn't justify death threats or harrassment, of course, but when you release your personal information, you shouldn't be too surprised if your opponents take advantage of it by posting it where others can see it. Publishing public information is scarcely a criminal matter.

I find this far less offensive than either:

a) when the Bush twins were busted for underage drinking at Chuy's in Austin, a few right-wingers managed to acquire the (non-public) name, address, phone and Social Security numbers of the waitress who turned them in, and posted that on the Internet,

b) during the lead-up to the Kobe Bryant rape trial, Bryant supporters similarly posted the name, address, and other personal information of the alleged accuser, including photos of her and even an aerial photograph indicating her house,

c) after Tikkun editor Rabbi Michael Lerner wrote material judged too "pro-Palestinian" by certain pro-Israeli hard-liners, said hard-liners put out flyers calling him a "traitor to Judaism," and including his address, phone number, and the names and photos of his children, plus the routes they followed when they walked to school.

Any of those are far more condemnable than merely making a wider post of information the students had already published themselves.

33. Not really
while the students erred by putting their personal information on a press release, it was a press release, not a public document. The press etiquette is not to publish that personal information unless OK'd by the subject. Malkin is a disgusting slime.

50. "Press Etiquette"...
...is a noble concept, but there's something to be said for not assuming that etiquette will always be followed.

I've had cases where newspapers (granted, small-town weeklies rather than the NYT) routinely published the contact info in any story generated by a press release.

The good news is that it appears that the only thing provided, and published, were the students' names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. That would permit harrassment, certainly, but providing their home or dorm addresses could get them killed.

I once received death threats for a LTTE (against homophobia) published in a local paper. Note that this was not a press release with contact info; the harrasser simply looked up my name (published as part of the letter) in the local phone book. Fortunately, I was living in a large apartment complex, and while the phone book listed the street address of the complex, it provided no clue as to which of the 200+ units in the complex was mine. (And that was the last time I ever had a listed phone number!)

Or a life.

Michelle Malkin writes, angrily, "Grow up and take responsibility." I think that's a very good idea; Malkin should start with numero uno.

And if one or more of those organizers is assaulted and possibly killed, then Michelle should plead "Guilty" and demand that no leniency be shown at her sentencing.

31. While I think the students were careless to post their personal info...
...it doesn't justify the treatment they have received. Here are a few examples of e-mails they got from the Malkinoids (edited for content):

You will pay for your seditious activities. It is only a matter of time...We are retired military snipers & we are watching you...

I hope one fine young American very, very soon puts his shiny gun barrel up to your left temple and pulls the trigger. Now THAT will make America a much, much better place to live for the rest of us, you utterly disgusting piece of sh*t...

F*ck*ng pansy do**h*b*g, you're lucky one of those recruiters didn't put his foot up your silly little ass. Get cancer, you traitorous sh*t breath c*cks*ck*r.

:puke:

My idea: if you look part-way down the student group's website, you'll find their phone numbers and e-mail addresses are still posted. (Look for the post titled "please contact indymedia and.") Instead of retaliating with hate posts against Malkin and her ilk, might I suggest that DUers consider sending them positive messages to counter the Malkinoid Hate Fest?

Here's what I sent them:

A message of support

I just wanted the three of you to know that there are a whole lot of people who support you -- far more than any nutcases whose lives are so bereft of positive meaning that they get themselves hooked on the spewings of a psycho-blogger like Malkin.

Keep up the good fight!

of the wingnut brat pack - a title that is rather hard to win, considering the competition. Frankly, I don't see why anyone publishes her tantrums at all - and stunts like this should be used as evidence to demand her work be removed from newspapers. She isn't mature enough to have anything to say - and isn't capable of participating in the public discourse without resorting to middle school bullying.

If she appears in your local newspaper, enlighten them to this BS and request they replace her with an adult.

58. Um.
Posting personal contact information of political opponents, often with winking encouragements to harrass them, is something I see fairly regularly here on DU.

I agree with you that it's immoral, but I don't think it's unusual, and the left do it too.

She shouldn't be doing it, but if she's as low as a human being can go then a lot of liberals are down there with her.

64. She Did The Same Thing To Chris Matthews A While Back

Dear little Michelle got cross-ways with Tweety some time ago. I read her column in which she described the incident, and I remember that she published some personal information about him---his home address, or phone number, or both.

Really, really sick behavior......
