Making connections
Follow-up to the brouhaha over the article about Maryscott O'Connor and My Left Wing, which appeared in the Saturday edition of the Washington Post. Maryscott responds here to the comments she's received since that article appeared

http://www.myleftwing.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=7550

The whole thing is worth reading, but I'd like to highlight this part:

Among the hundreds of emails I received yesterday (the good outnumbering the bad by a large ratio) was a short note from a 76 year old woman in Virginia. I could almost see her hands shaking as she typed her missive to a complete stranger she'd just read about in her morning paper. She explained that she had only ever used the computer her children got for her to send and receive emails. But she read the story about me in the Post and was almost overwhelmed with gratitude and relief. She lives alone. She doesn't talk much to her children anymore, and she watches a lot of television.
...
One little old lady sitting at her kitchen table alone in Virginia stopped feeling so alone yesterday because of something I did; that is enough.

She also played a part in doing the same for a man in Cleveland, who found my Faithful Ohio blog by way of a link on My Left Wing, after hearing the WaPo article discussed on C-SPAN.

Letting people know they aren't alone, and helping them find and connect with like-thinking individuals. It's a good thing.

There are so many very lonely people. The internet has been a blessing to many of them. It certainly has helped me feel less alone in my rage against the machine. It's amazing how close you can feel to supposed strangers when sharing thoughts in writing with others that have the same goals.

I know quite a few people here at DU that I would be honored to meet in person and know the connection is already there in our hearts and minds. We can pick our friends of the heart.

Nice story. I am so pleased to hear of more people that are less lonely. That is a good thing, I agree completely! Good night! :hi:
