Scout Troop Warned on Immigration Protest
http://www.comcast.net/news/national/index.jsp?cat=DOMESTIC&fn=/2006/04/15/368619.html&cvqh=itn_scout

A Boy Scout official has warned a troop that its participation in last week's immigration demonstrations violated the organization's policy against involvement in political events.

Members of Troop 987 _ made up of 15 Hispanic boys ages 12 to 15 _ were attempting to earn merit badges for "Citizenship in the Community," scoutmaster Michael Clara said.

Clara said he received a phone call this week from Vic Rowberry, a Great Salt Lake Council of Boy Scouts of America field director, who said the troop should not have been involved.

Clara said he doesn't understand the difference between performing the flag ceremony and staying at the Republican State Convention in August 2005, and carrying and passing out flags at immigration demonstrations. Godfrey said members can serve as a color guard or in a flag ceremony as long as the troop does not participate further in the event.

1. those boys should join the girl scouts.
Most boy scout troops are probably fine and encouraging. However, the Boy Scouts as a national organization is vile.

badges for them to earn.

5. Penn & Teller Just Bashed BSA
on a recent episode of Bullsh**

They were ripping them for their anti-gay (and anti-atheist) policies.

3. I like the idea of encouraging young people to participate in their
responsibilities and their rights as citizens.

The grown-up policy makers for this group sound to me like a pack of Church Ladies. Way too prohibitive. Would they have scolded Rosa Parks as well, for "breaking the rules"?

6. I never let my boys join the boy scouts.
My neighbor was all worried that I was committing a sin. I thought them much to militaristic for me. I am vey happy with my decision.

8. sallyseven, it sounds to me like you made the right decision.
The Boy Scouts as an organization is a bit too "Hitlerjugend" for me.

I dropped out of the Cub Scouts thousands of years ago because I didn't see the point in making a damned balsa-wood airplane.

7. Uh huh...someone needs to tell Rowberry to f*ck off
And the Boy Scouts are starting to smell more and more like a piece of rightwing manure. Who the hell are they kidding when they claim no political involvement? Their whole exclusion policy is a POLITICAL decision. This bullying is going to just make people more angry with Repukes.

9. The members of this troop were Hispanic and they participated
in an immigration march...

But the Boy Scouts HQ in Salt Lake City...have no problem attending the Republican (white) Convention.....hmmmmm....racism anyone...

I hope the parents and the troop leaders stand up to this bullshit...better yet disengage from the Boy Fuhrer Scouts....they will be better off...
