Help me out here...
It seems like EVERYTHING that gets hugely popular (Harry Potter, Pokemon, Furbys, et al) the fundamentalists come out and raise a furor, calling it "satanic".

Now, here's a question: was it like this always? As in, in the 40's and 50's, were people decrying Hula Hoops and poodle skirts as satanic?

1. only the snake-handling loonies
Well, there was a pretty big hoo-ha over "the devil's music" aka Rock 'n Roll.

2. It has become like the Salem Witch trials or the McCarthy era.
Anything that pisses any one of the Fundies off, or strikes anyone of their psychotic members as strange, is now denounced as Satanic, or encouragng homosexuality.
They are all totally insane.

8. They do seem to be obsessed
with sex and satan. I'm not sure why their minds are always on these particular subjects.

4. Napoleon Dynomite was well received by the right.
 I just finished the Divinci Code, seems like there has always been a power fight between the church and the pagans.

5. I once interviewed a TV producer, who told me that in the 60's,
the fundies had a hissy-fit about his TV show ("Bewitched"). They tried to get him pulled off the air and it was touch and go for a while. This guy also produced and/or directed "I Love Lucy" and "Gidget."

But then you know what hoola hoops are, don't you?

7. It's about picking on minorities.
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 02:29 PM by Festivito
Gays, (2%-10%)
gays that marry, (what? less than half a percent?)
teenagers, (rock & roll, Billy Graham made his fortune capitalizing on the generation gap.)
intelligentsia, (Ivory towers)
blacks, (Codeword: Welfare queen)
hispanics, (Immigration)
abortion-aged women attempting abortions, (Pro-life meaning pro-criminalization)

"Look over there, at THEM, we're not as bad as them, we donate money to help THEM come to faith..."
This is the message of the COOL-AID-CHRISTIANS who give Christ a bad time with His name.

ON EDIT: Your question: Rock and roll, dancing, science, test-tube babies, unwed mothers, ... all brought religious controversy.

9. 50s
I graduated in 1960 from hs. The only thing I remember is that rock &Roll was going to send us all to hell. So far so good, I'm still here.

You're ruining His Sable Majesty's plan!

 (furbys?) :wtf:

EDIT: It seems that the only commonality is that these things are new, never-before-seen. Therefore scary and possibly a threat, since the Bible doesn't tell one whether to like them or not...

The fundy mindset seems to be all about fear of change, IMO.

11. Remember, fundie churches are a business
and anything that takes attention (and money!) away from their business is bad.

12. I think in the 40's and 50's it was dime novels, comic books
and the beginning of Rock & Roll. There will always be something they have to fight. Their entire religion is based on us against them. We're going to heaven and everyone else is going to hell. If you don't let one of our priests dunk you in water and say a prayer over you you will spend eternity buring in the fires of damnation. If they are all going to heaven I'd rather be in hell.
