Three Run-Ins with Ultra Consrv. just last week.
There was a person collecting signatures for stem-cell research (letting voters vote on it) outside the public library. Two employees in the library were just pitching a fit so the pollster had to move further away from the library. There are a lot of people here in Missouri who really don't like stem cell research.

Then I heard some people going off about abortion and other birth controll issues. I stay out of that one. It will blow up into a huge storm really quickly.

I was behind a woman at the grocery store who was passing names and e-mails for Congress people who are against the more moderate immegration laws - they want all 12 million people deported. And by next week. They were e-mail address for Blunt and Bond and Tancredo (?) This was kind of funny because a whole lot of the people doing the cleaning in the grocery store are Hispanic and most likely illegal.

I am feeling kind of surrounded by the ultras here.

1. For the immigration law person
You don't have to get overly hostile or in her face. Just ask her how she's going to pay for deporting 12 million people. Since we’re running another record federal budget deficit as we speak, how are 12 million people going to get relocated? Many of them are going to resist, hide, appeal to the court system, and use other means – legal and illegal – to avoid being deported. Will it cost a hundred dollars per person? A thousand? Ten thousand? At ten thousand per, moving 12 million people out of the country will cost 120 billion dollars.

Is there anything at all that we might better spend 120 billion dollars on?

7. Good grief, I feel dumb!
I have thought of, and read, many reasons why massive deportation is an ill-conceived out idea, but i don't recall seeing anything about the cost involved. This is HUGH! Thanks.

3. You should have asked her for all the literature or flyers she had ..
so you could pass them on. Then take them home and throw them in the trash.

4. She didn't have fliers. But what is odd is how these people
all just assumed that everyone agrees with them. It is like it never dawned on them that maybe some of the people right there didn't agree. And I know there are lots and lots of people who live here who do disagree.

5. I was born near New York City ....
then moved at age 10 to Los Angeles ....

I stayed in LA for 37 years ...

Then ? ... I moved to Springfield MO in 2003 .....

It took me 7 months to find a piddly job ....

As a NYC born Liberal, who spent the better part of his life Cosmopolitan Los Angeles: I was so stifled and uncomfortable in Springfield, being a northern outpost of the Ozarks, and the ultra-uber-fundamentalist mindset which exists there ....

VERY pretty land, but what an awful dearth of reason ....

I and my children now live in Oregon, and are loving it .... Its even more beautiful than Missouri ....

I tripled my wage coming here .... It is VERY liberal in the Portland area ....

I will never miss Missouri ....

6. I have lived here over 30 years. I am used to all the wierd
views of the ultra conservatives.

But I love the Missouri countryside and all of the wildlife that does so well here.

Some of my family lives in Kansas and that state is really beautiful in kind of a stark contrast sort of way.
