Great Tom Tomorrow CARTOONS - 2-parter: "THE YEAR IN REVIEW"
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 10:33 PM by Nothing Without Hope
2005, a year that shall live in infamy!!! Tom Tomorrow hits some of the leading low points, but as he found, there are so many, there's just not enough room!

Tom Tomorrow's cartoons can be found at Working For Change, an excellent site that I recommend to you all if you are not yet familiar with it. I'll paste the image files for the two parts of "The Year in Review" below. Here's where they were found at Working For Change:
Part I: http://www.workingforchange.com/comic.cfm?itemid=20086 (Dec 20)
Part II: http://www.workingforchange.com/comic.cfm?itemid=20111 (Dec 27)

5. thanks for all the 'toons!
I love Tom Tomorrow -- I think my most favoritest ever had Cheney as Burgess Meredith's 1960's-era The Penguin (complete with cigarette holder clenched in Cheney's twisted mouth) and * as a stiped-shirted flunky. I actually clipped two versions of it -- same images, slightly different text. TT is carried in our free local leftwing entertainment paper (www.flagpole.com -- colorbearer of Athens under surveilence), along with Ted Rall, but to my chagrin I often miss a week here and there.

6. Here is the home page for Working For Change:

The Tom Tomorrow cartoons are in the "cartoons" section, but there is much more to this site than just cartoons.

Great rendering of Missy Coulter, the creased pus-sacs under her eyes never looked better.

10. Yes, I love the details in his images. Note how Soros calls the ACLU guy
"comrade" and the ACLU sign is lettered in a modified alphabet to look a bit like the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, for example, the reversed R. He really is a genius! His ideas, his dialog, and his rendering are all absolutely superb, always. I'd like more people to see his work - it's devastating at showing the lies and hypocrisy of the Bush Administration (and sometimes the weakness of the Dems) in high relief.

11. Da, comrade!
We shall claim the earth for Mother Russia with mighty ACLU hate group and our vast army of freedom-loathing homosexuals!

We shall kiss in Times Square when Christmas at last is defeated! We will drink wine from France out of the skulls of Beagle-puppies!

Yeah, he gets that goofy thought-process of theirs just right.

And I know I'll laugh again when I re-read it tomorrow.

18. Oh, you may laugh but...
soon we shall have the children of America kneeling to golden icons of Barbra Streisand and every classroom will be shown "Queer Eye For the Straight Guy" from dawn to dusk.

The AGENDA is at hand! Victory is ours! Be strong my brothers and sisters...the day draws near...;-)

26. Yes, it's dark humor but it is badly needed to clarify just how irrational
the American public has been in allowing it to happen.

Tom Tomorrow also has a blog and has published 6 books. Some of the stuff in the store at his blog site is really great. I've posted on this downthread here:

in specific issues. This one is from March 2005 and is called "Moral Bankruptcy." Have you seen a clearer, more concise, more powerful summary of the infamous bankruptcy bill passed by the GOP Congress? Including by our pathetic Dem Congressional representatives?

25. thanks! MORE ON TOM TOMORROW - his blog and his 6th book
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 12:02 AM by Nothing Without Hope
info from the Working For Change site:

Tom Tomorrow is the creator of the award-winning weekly cartoon of social and political satire, This Modern World, which appears regularly in approximately 150 papers across the country. In 1998, he won the first place Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Cartooning. His sixth book, an oversized treasury/career retrospective called The Great Big Book of Tomorrow, is available online (http://www.workingforchange.com/textlink.cfm?tcampid=102¬rkd=y). Check out the Tom Tomorrow Blog at thismodernworld.com (http://www.thismodernworld.com).

The store at Tom Tomorrow's blog site (http://www.cafepress.com/tomsworld) has some great stuff. Who could resist THIS on a bumper sticker or T shirt?

28. I can't disagree - it absolutely cracks me up too. And typical of TT,
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 12:18 AM by Nothing Without Hope
at the same time it makes us laugh, it makes us SEE so much more clearly.

The "Equation" image comes in a lot of formats at Tom Tomorrow's store (http://www.cafepress.com/tomsworld/1071436) - I'd love to see it blossoming all over the place. The idea it embodies is not a new one, but no where else have I seen it expressed in such a devastating way.

One of the many things that I admire about Tom Tomorrow's opus of work is that it is NEVER mean-spirited. His humor is unfailingly clear-eyed and compassionate. He skewers the criminals, the greedy, the liars, and he shows a sure touch that reveals his empathy with the victims of the policies and events he is fighting. You can see his anger clearly, but it is always focussed exactly where it needs to be. I'm not sure I'm making myself clear here - TT's ability and discipline in keeping on with his fight and staying focussed on what needs to be done are far beyond the common. He keeps on cartooning, week after week and year after year, no matter how disheartened or sickened he may be at what happens. To me, this is cause for mighty admiration aside from his potent talents as a draftsman and humorist. It's related to the reasons why I chose my DU user name - it's not easy to keep fighting, keep hoping, but it's absoulutely essential. When you stop, that's the moment you lose everything - not only the fight but yourself.

Laugh the bastards out of office, laugh the public awake despite the Kool-Aid, laugh us back into a democracy. It's more powerful than would be immediately obvious to some. As Samuel Clemons wrote:

"Irreverence is the champion of liberty and its only sure defense." –-Mark Twain

29. Related DU thread on the "Equation" cartoon - but does not give
the cartoonist's name or how to obtain his work in the opening post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x5712798
thread title (12/29 GD): ****Great cartoon***** -- would make a great bumper sticker!

I and others have now posted the contact and ordering info in that thread, but we all need to remember that to keep Tom Tomorrow and the other progressive cartoonists working, we HAVE TO SUPPORT THEIR WORK. There are many options of how to do this avaialble at links on the home page of Tom Tomorrow's blog. I'm sure he does not have a luxurious standard of living, he is doing this work week after week because he feels it's something he can contribute to make things right. We need to support him so he can keep doing it.
