As McCain fundraises in New York today, Davis opens New York soft money group
John McCain has been full of tough talk lately about the need to address lobbying reform and crack down on campaign finance abuses. But even as the Senate’s most outspoken advocate on campaign finance reform offered an amendment to the lobbying bill specifically addressing 527 groups, the treasurer of McCain’s Straight Talk America PAC, Keith Davis, was setting one up in New York.
“John McCain criticizes Bush’s dirty campaign tactics, then hires the guys who ran his shady race; he preaches about campaign finance reform, then hires guys who start their own soft money groups. I think we’re getting a sense of just how far John McCain is willing to bend his principles in order to run for president,” said Christy Setzer, communications director for the Senate Majority Project.
Political Money Line reported Thursday that Davis, who is also the treasurer for Sen. Lamar Alexander’s PAC and Senate campaign committees, registered the “Stronger New York” group on April 3.
