a friendly reminder: welcome the new members...
When I first joined DU, I'd see a thread like this about once a month, but I haven't seen it for a couple of years now, so maybe it is a good idea to revisit it:

With the elections coming up, we're going to see more people jumping off the gop titanic and making their way over here looking for a better way...If you see a low-count poster (less than 50) in a thread making a positive contribution, make sure you welcome that person with a quick post--IMO, a site this big can be intimidating, and it's important that new folks that lurked forever feel welcomed and that they belong...

I know it was awhile ago, but when I first posted, no fewer than 10 people welcomed me to DU...It may help to try to bring that warm, friendly, open-arm embrace back, because I see it less and less often...

2. Thanks for the reminder.
Someone put up similar threads when I was new, and I've made a point to welcome low-count posters who seemed to mean well, like you said.

It bears repeating. :)

3. Good reminder
I make the effort at every opportunity. I do have a hard time welcoming Mets Fans though. Only kidding!!! Mets ensure the Phillies will be at least one place higher in the standings.

5. If I notice someone with less than sixty or so posts
I make it a habit to welcome that person. It's a nice gesture.

7. How many posts should one have before you can be a welcomer?
I was welcomed several times. It was nice. I could have many more posts but I'm a two fingered typer.

9. No time like the present to start welcoming others!
You don't need any special credentials, just a friendly attitude. ;)

Just jump in there when you see a newbie! It is amazing all the nice new people you can meet. And when someone needs some help or info you happen to have, give 'em a hand. One of the best things about DU is that we are all coming from different places with different things to offer.

If your first post is to welcome someone, that's fine.

Someone who had been here over a year told me that I had been the first person to welcome her. I didn't realize that, but she remembered it. (To clarify: I welcomed her when she was new. She still remembered it a year later.)

Anyway, since I haven't seen you before, welcome to DU. :hi:

12. I still remember who welcomed me.
I still remember those who were rude and dismissive just because I had a low post count.

14. That proves that welcoming people has value.
Funny thing. I hadn't thought of it before this thread, but no one welcomed me. That was because I was here on the first day, Inauguration Day, 2001. (We could hardly welcome each other.)

21. You can welcome a newbie at any time. You don't need
to have a specific number of posts.

19. yuppers
Yea, it really is helpful.
That first message would typically be a welcome, and that's heartening.

I never said thankyou to any of the people that welcomed me though, because I wasn't sure if that would be considered spamming, or if it would mess up the thread...
Though technically the 'hello newbie' posts do the same...
