Whoever on Cheney's staff thought that was a good PR idea should probably be fired

It was live on CNN and Fox...The BOOs drowned out all other sounds...Of course FOX will probably monkey with the sound when (if) they replay it

62. Fox (not Faux News but the "network" Fox station) sure monkeyed
around with the way they presented a short so-called "PA" film of GWB this Sunday just before the NASCAR race!

I know the reputation of the NASCAR fans among liberals, but there are a few of us out here who are diehard gearheads and still enjoy watching the races -- even if they are aired on Fox for half the season.

I about threw something at my TV anyway this past Sunday when, just after the usual "Gentlemen, start your engines!" announcement in the preliminaries, Dubya's ugly mug appeared on my screen. I always mute his voice the minute I hear it, so I didn't listen to what he said past the first sentence; but I WAS curious about what sort of reaction from the crowd he would get, even at a NASCAR event, these days.

So I turned the sound back on, and noticed that the loud roar of cheering which always greets that "start your engines" cry appeared to be continuing right where they had cut into it with the W announcement! Which made it sound like the crowd was cheering for that idiot ... although it wasn't clear whether the crowd at the track even saw the Dimson recorded announcement. I assumed at first it was being shown on the Jumbotron, but I don't know if it was or not.

Still, the way they aired it, it was confusing as to whom the crowd cheered for -- the drivers or the faux pResident. I do know that not all NASCAR fans are fond of W -- or were even in pre-2000 election times. My brother is a total gearhead and frequent NASCAR race attendee, and he's about three notches LEFT OF ME in his political views.

One thing I feel sure of is that even Repugs won't like it if their loyalty is taken for granted and they continue to be publicly shamed by the criminal gang in the White House. Once those folks turn on them, the Bushites had better watch out!....

79. Die-hard Democrat liberal here....
and a Die-hard NASCAR fan, too. Know pit-crew members on several crews. Watched Jeff Gordon win his first race (Charlotte Night Race) while standing on top of the the #90 transport (Heilig-Meyers Racing at the time, owned by June Dunleavey--a friend). Sat on the wall right behind the pits in Atlanta and watched Gordon win his first championship. (BTW, don't like Gordon---I hope Mark Martin wins the championship for once)....and, I wouldn't piss on Dubya if he was on fire. Dems need to learn how to relate to NASCAR fans...many would make VERY GOOD DEMOCRATS!

88. i'm a liberal that was disparaging of Nascar.
i'm coming around there. I recently met a centrist ex-mil type dem that loves nascar so I've learned to temper my nascar jokes with the reality that there are, indeed, liberal nascar fans.

89. I'm no fan of Gordon, either, and Mark Martin is my favorite
driver! Heck, I just enjoy the races, though, and envy you and my brother who have actually BEEN to some! You lucky dogs! :)

I'm happy to see there are some NASCAR fans (or at least one other one) here at DU ... always sorta makes me sad when I see "NASCAR dads" getting lumped in there with our other foes. There are plenty of women who love the races, too ... DUers should just check out a race some time and note the ladies in the crowd -- and a helluva lot of kids!

I know many of those fine folks often vote against their own interests and don't realize it, so I'm always uplifted when my brother attends a race because he can talk politics with anyone and make 'em see the light. So I figure he makes a convert or two every time he goes to a race! He never misses Talladega. And you're right -- many of those fans would make fine Democrats! I'll bet a lot of them once were, and could be won back about now.

I did get to see one of Mark's cars close up when I lived in Dallas and he was sponsored by Winn-Dixie; they had his car parked out in front of the store where I got groceries, and we could get a real good look at it. Never would have imagined the inside looked like that!

90. You should see the shops where the cars are made....
Unbelievable! I took one of the kids who was being helped by Nascar Charities in NY, who was visiting in VA to Dunleavy's shop and watched them work on the cars there. I got to eat dinner at the track with Martin's crew several years ago just before a night race....Met Martin's dad before he died. Real nice folk. Nascar fans are "bread and butter" issues driven (which is why the tax cut issues worked well for Repukes)---they are now starting to see how they've been duped, and are looking for REAL LEADERSHIP.....SENSIBLE tax policy, balancing the budget, education, minimum wage, health care, social security, reworking the medicare prescription drug plan so that it actually HELPS seniors rather than the drug companies, good paying jobs etc.....THESE ARE THE WINNING ISSUES FOR DEMS, and we to keep pounding away on them showing folk how our plan is best for them.

Keep up the pressure talking about this administration's lies and failures with War, Security, Natural Disaster, yes---BUT TALK A LOT about the "bread and butter issues" and we can even win back the south.

<< Keep up the pressure talking about this administration's lies and failures with War, Security, Natural Disaster, yes---BUT TALK A LOT about the "bread and butter issues" and we can even win back the south. >>

We southerners have our flaws, but "bread and butter," "down to earth," and "salt of the earth" also describes us. This administration's domestic policies have ground so many here down so far, I keep thinking SURELY any loyalty some have felt to the Repugs must be eroding badly. I see it all around me here.

Seriously, Bush or someone on his staff, was at least smart enough to put wounded soldiers or a dad of a soldier in Iraq on either side of him to stave off the boo's. Did they actually think that Cheney is so much more popular than Bush that he didn't need the "protection?"

I guess the thinking was, better Cheney be booed than Bush.

Of course, Bush shielded himself from boos when he threw out the first pitch in Cinci by coming out to the mound with some vets. Hiding behind the troops, as usual.

As stupid as he is, Chimpy was at least smart enough when he threw out the first pitch the other day, to walk out in the company of two or three veterans he’d sent out to be wounded. Folks don’t boo guys in uniform, so Chimpy had a shield for his photo op. Cheney should have followed the lead.

groundskeepers are pretty strict about not letting anyone but pitchers on the mound. At the Cards opener yesterday they had 2 Cards players throw out the first pitch (Pujols and another), both had to stand in front of the mound.
