Just say no to hugs!!!
Little girl in Kindergarten has to apologize to another student for hugging that student... The school's policy is a "NO TOUCHING" policy......

Have we gone too far?? Are hugs now a bad thing??????

1. to be fair
I saw this piece on the Today Show and the school spokesperson said she had hugged another child pretty hard and lifted them off the ground. Seems like a little more than a hug to me. But, kids are kids. Seems way overblown.

5. On that point, just how far off the ground can one 5 year old
girl lift another 5 year old girl?

They aren't exactly WWF material.

3. I don't let my kids touch each other
one kid's hug is another's worst nightmare! An uninvited hug is intrusive. But the Today Show? I don't think so. You do what we've done for generations: teach a kid what is appropriate touch and what is not. Right now my 2.5 year old grandson hugs the frozen food guy when he comes in the front door. And the pizza man. We're working on it.

4. My 5 year old was hugging
some of the kids at pre-school...nobody freaked out, he was simply told to not do that.
And he hasn't since.
We told him never to hug a stranger, that WE deserve all his hugs.

6. Hugs are good
Both my kids are huggers and I think it's great. I just teach them some guidelines like don't hug strangers and don't hug someone if it's not welcomed. They have to make sure that it's okay first. But I'm not going to squelch their natural tendency toward showing empathy, caring and affection for others.

A few years back, my son came home from kindergarten one day with an "incident report". He had kissed a girl on the cheek. Both parties were amenable to the kiss; parents were okay with it too. Jeez Louise! They were friends and my son was just so happy to see her on the playground that he ran over, hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. Then they ran off and played together. Of course, they were both pulled aside and "talked to" about it. And I got the "incident report".

I've kept it. I'm going to frame it and give it to him someday.
