This was in Westchester Co., NY.

While I was getting $20 worth for my fuel efficient Integra(which took all of a couple of minutes to pump), an SUV was on the other side of the island. I mentioned to the attendant how happy I was to have my car and not that one and he laughingly agreed. I am sure that the driver of that SUV was not laughing.

I wonder if this new sticker shock at the pumps is because it was a relatively mild winter and the oil companies didn't rake in as much as they expected for home heating oil?

I don't know how people are going to make ends meet while Exxon/Mobil, Texaco are laughing all the way to the bank with their record profits.

BTW Remember that these prices don't only reflect our own transportation costs, but those of all of our suppliers. Higher prices in the stores etc.

1. I used to live in White Plains...
and it was always super-high price there. Now I live in Fla., and the prices are almost the exact same. Now that's getting scary.

2. I'm almost glad gas prices are high.
Maybe people will wake up to the consequences of being dependant on fossil fuels...not only for global reasons but for environmental ones.

9. I can understand your point and am conscious of my gas usage. The big
problem is that there are many people who live in areas (like where I live now)where there is no public transportation to speak of and having a family must be able to get around. Right now we really are at the mercy of the oil companies.

When I lived in NYC I used mass transit and foot power 98% of the time.

8. I've get about 28mpg local with my car and use it sparingly now. I try
to be energy efficient even in planning how I am going about my chores.

4. I feel your pain, friend
If you find yourself in Dutchess or CT, gas up there. You at least save a few cents.

I sold at the flea market at the Dutchess Mall and would fill up there every week! The last time I was up that way was last August and the cost of gas was pretty close to what it is here.

13. Yes, but once in awhile you find a bargain at an indy gas station
Although those are fast disappearing. There's an indy station in downtown Brewster that's consistently $0.05 below what the Sunoco across the street is charging.

14. The problem is that it will cost me more money to drive to Brewster than
to get gas there! It's a good 45 minutes from here. I recall that someone posted a site once that listed the cheapest gas prices in an area. I have to try and find it.

Thanks and :hi:

5. yeah high fuel costs will effect everything!
Your last statement is the kicker!
The oil administration blames America for its addiction to oil, well they cash in record profits and fly around on air force one.

7. I posted about AFO last week. There the shrub is flying all around
the country (pushing his own personal agendas) and we the American people are picking up that tab.

10. For those of you feeling the pinch at the pump,
And can ride a bike, I highly recommend one of these.

A Bajaj scooter. It gets 100mpg and it cruises at 55-60mph. A joy to ride, stable and forgiving. It has a four speed manual transmission, which insures quick pick-up from a dead stop. It costs around $2800. I picked up one of these babies last Sept, and have been delighted with it ever since. I had to do something, for my 52 mile round trip commute was just eating up the gas. Now I cruise right on by the gas station, laughing all the way at the SUVs. I've put over 3000 miles on mine already, and it's still going great.

The only drawback is that with a 145cc engine, most states will require that you get a license plate for the bike, and a motorcycle permit for yourself.

And if you don't want to ride a scooter, there's always the efficient European cars you can import, like the Smart Car, with 66mpg

Trouble is, with all the fees for importing one vehicle by a private individual, it might just be easier and cheaper to get a Prius:shrug:

11. Gas up at CITGO. It may be a few cents cheaper.
But even if not, at least the profit goes to Hugo Chavez's Venezuela.
