War on Easter?
Some background first. I was listening to a local show with the obligatory "wacky morning DJ's" and they have an annual "Adult Easter Egg hunt" at a local football stadium. This year, one of plastic eggs will have keys to a brand new vehicle. The egg hunt is annually held on Good Friday, which is a day off for many people, so there is always a big turnout.
Now on to the point. A guy emailed the duo and said that he has lived here for about a year and enjoys listening to them but why do they call it an Easter egg hunt? In this guy's opinion, that is exclusionary because Easter is a religious holiday and said it should simply be called an "egg hunt". So he stated that he won't be participating. Now I ask you, what do eggs, candy, and cars have to do with any religious aspect of Easter? In the Christian faith, Easter is likely the single most holy day there is. I think this emailer may be setting these two DJ's up for some type of fox "news" type of report, "War on Easter". The man has some legitimate points, but again, I fail to see what plastic eggs, rolling around in mud and car giveaways have to do with religion. Maybe it's when someone finds the keys to the car he or she will holler "Thank you Jesus!" But maybe they should thank the car dealer who is giving it away. Just want DUers opinion on this matter. Thank you.

4. Easter Eggs are not about Easter
Any place having a party on Good Friday ain't Christian, that's for sure.

You know, nobody complains about Valentine's Day. I guarantee you the person making the complaint is a fundy in disguise. I don't know anybody who thinks Easter eggs are religious.

Except the chickens who lay them. If you have ever seen a broody hen, you've seen a religious experience.

6. Did the DeeJay point out that the egg is more a pagan tradition
than a Christian tradition? Almost all of the ways in which Easter is celebrated in this country can be traced back to paganism.

The Easter Bunny, for example, was a symbol for fertility.

He should get himself out to the Pagan/Easter Egg Hunt and embrace multicultrualism.

(There are quite a few Fundies who decry Easter egg hunts and the Easter Bunny, too...)

7. Passover (Pesach) begins at sundown tomorrow.
A roasted egg is on the seder plate. Children hunt for the afikomen, not eggs.

9. My college roommate invited me to spend Spring Break with her
family many many years ago. They were Jewish and celebrated Passover in the traditional manner.

I was fascinated by the whole ritual, from the preparation of foods to the Seder celebration.

I remember thinking then just how much more meaningful the celebration of Passover was compared to the Easter celebration.

I've always wanted to be invited to a Seder again, but, alas, it has never happened.

10. I've been fortunate to have had good friends that were Jewish all my life.
I've frequently been the only gentile at Passover Seder. I personally respect all faiths and regard each as a reflection of a Truth while personally rejecting dogma. I've attended services in several faith traditions, from Buddhist to Baptist, and find much in each each worth respecting.
