A Day Without Mexicans - film to rent.
http://www.adaywithoutamexican.com/index1.htm

Who will clean your toilets, pick your vegetables, clean your pool, heal your children?

I am sick of all the racism and bigotry being posted here.:grr:

If all the jobs outsourced to Mexico and elsewhere were paying human wages no one would be racing across the borders for work and there would be more slave wage jobs for americans. The illegals are NOT taking work that pays any decent wages, most of the time. Americans are unwilling to do the hard work for next to nothing. Why are those that come here and do these jobs being crucified for wanting survival??

Maybe instead of attacking those that only want to survive, you should all be raising hell with the corporate masters that outsource and pay nothing to the workers in those jobs sent out of the states.

I guess common sense isn't.

Flame away.

10. Corporations ONLY outsource for cheap labor mondo.
Pure greed is why any job here or there pays slave wages.

6. It is never simple...

If anyone thinks that the tired and hungry people who have washed up on US shores were able to do well in the US so long as they had no interference from the 'locals' -- you are wrong. Read "Angelas Ashes" and "Tis" -- Frank McCourt's autobiographies. During periods when too many immigrants (legal or illegal) entered the country, jobs were scarce and they did *not* do better than they had in the old place. McCourt's family suffered terribly in New York and eventually returned to the slums of Ireland where they had been better off (and they lived in terrible conditions there).

I *do* believe in immigration and believe we should increase rates of legal immigration for political refugees, especially.

I do believe that we should crack down on businesses that illegally hire illegal immigrants and raise the minimum wage for all legal workers. Millions of Mexicans would return home on their own. No purges. No wall. No racism. Humane treatment for all - including access to emergency health care for any human being who is in this country.

If we want to improve the lives of Mexicans - end NAFTA so they can re-establish laws that protect their businesses instead of having to buy the crap that can be so cheaply mass produced by US mega-companies. Ending NAFTA and GATT are forms of economic protectionism - it would protect their economy and their people by making sure that their businesses are undercut by mega-companies.

We are a country - we've made a 'pact' to take care of this land and each other. The better we take care of ourselves the better we can help our neighbors. (And for Godsakes END the period of US imperialism and militarism and...).

Please tune in to Thom Hartmann -- he is the only person I have heard who really understands all of the issues, and difficult choices, involved. His show plays 24/7 - link to stream it is in the first paragraph here:

<http://www.whiterosesociety.org/Hartmann.html>

On Edit: There should not be *any* jobs that pay too little for an American to want them. It is immoral to expect *anyone* legal or illegal immigrant or citizen to work for such slave wages.

9. You said it in one paragraph IndyOp.
"There should not be *any* jobs that pay too little for an American to want them. It is immoral to expect *anyone* legal or illegal immigrant or citizen to work for such slave wages."

How true IndyOp, and that is my point.:hi:

Why should corporations pay such small wages to the workers in those countries with our outsourced work that they flock here for better wages and still remain the working poor?

7. here where I am I have a choice in hiring someone who is an Amish,
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 08:36 AM by madokie
a Mennonite or a Mexican. The first two won't be paying any income taxes because of how they insist on being paid, the other more that likely is illegal and won't be paying taxes either. So if they aren't full blood Americans they don't get any labor money from me. And I do it because of Principle.
edit to add: :hi:

12. But madokie, illegals DO pay into our tax base and SS.
Many have fake id's and the money is taken from them. They do contribute more than anyone believes.

I would prefer that immigrants would come here legally, but the steps some want to keep others out is much scarier and offensive to me than illegal entry.

I feel like I am in old Berlin/new Palestine when I hear of walls and fences being built.

Watch the movie if you can find it. Very enlightening.

11. It is a GREAT film--and not heavy--it is actually pretty damn amusing!
And it has that low-budget quality that in some cases, and this is one, makes for a BETTER film. There's more attention to the story, none really, to special effects. They show it on cable every now and again, on the premium channels.

15. I was surprised to learn how much immigrants contribute
to our economy MADem.

Years ago I used to feel the way many do about illegals, I am ashamed to say. Now I am paying attention. :hi:
