Why would Cheney want to out Plame and Brewster Jennings?
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 06:58 AM by formercia
They were working in the UAE on Nuclear counter proliferation. It had little to do with Joe Wilson and the Niger documents but more to do with what Halliburton was doing in the UAE while Cheney was its CEO. Brewster Jennings was getting too close to exposing the activities and they had to be stopped.

Trading With The Enemy
Matthew Swibel, 04.19.04

If you want to get round export controls, just sell the product to a front company in Dubai. The middlemen will take it from there.
On paper the shipment was harmless enough. Sixty-six American-made spark gaps--high-speed electrical switches used in medical devices to break up kidney stones--traveled from the manufacturer in Salem, Massachusetts late last summer to a buyer in Secaucus, New Jersey. From there, according to the export declaration, they were to be shipped to their ultimate destination in Cape Town, South Africa. But these spark gaps can also be used to detonate nuclear bombs--and it turned out that the goods were aimed at an end user in Pakistan, with a stopover in Dubai. The commercial capital of the United Arab Emirates, where trading activity accounts for the biggest single chunk (16.5%) of a $20 billion economy, has become a favorite diversion point on the Persian Gulf for shady cargo. With no export controls and hardly any bureaucracy at ports, airports and free zones, this entrepôt provides stellar cover for smugglers hoping to bypass U.S. embargoes.
On Oct. 3 U.S. investigators got a tip from a South African source. The shipment was headed for Islamabad via a DHL freight-forwarding service on Emirates Airlines--Dubai's government carrier. Hours after the Emirates Airbus jet landed at Dubai International Airport on Oct. 20, a U.S. special agent there tracked down the spark gaps to the airline's cargo shed, contacted its director of security and demanded to inspect the box. The response? Not a chance, according to the U.A.E.'s director of customs. The next day the goods, valued at $30,000, arrived in Pakistan aboard another Emirates flight.

The alleged shipper, an Israeli national named Asher Karni, was arrested in December at Denver International Airport. He awaits trial in the U.S. for conspiring to export goods without a license, a crime that could result in a ten-year sentence and a $250,000 fine per count. Neither Emirates Airlines nor the U.A.E. has been criticized publicly by U.S. officials.

--snip--

Still, "companies are playing fast and loose," says Adam Pener of Conflict Securities Advisory Group, a Washington, D.C.-based consultancy to multinational businesses. Halliburton, for example, manages to do business with Iran obliquely. Its Dubai-based affiliate, Halliburton Products & Services Ltd., allegedly has no Americans on staff; the Houston oil services company claims it has no direct ownership of the operation. Nevertheless, FORBES has obtained documents showing how Kala Ltd., the British arm of the National Iranian Oil Co., solicited at least 17 separate bids from the affiliate during 1997 and 1998 (when Vice President Cheney was Halliburton's chief executive). A few bids include handwritten notes that say "FOB Dubai Airport" or "FOB Dubai port"--meaning that the U.A.E. was just a way station between Halliburton and Tehran. Halliburton would not comment on the bids. In any event, earlier this year the Treasury Department reopened a 2001 inquiry into Halliburton's Iran operations and its Dubai-based partner.

Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 07:12 AM by vickiss
had nothing to do with discrediting Wilson. BJ was too close to something someone in the WH didn't want revealed.

Cheney was a traitor before he stepped foot into the WH.

17. Me, too. The target was BJ&A without a doubt in my mind.
BJ&A was cover for too many effective NOC agents that interfered with arms trading (and profiteering). I strongly suspect that attempts to plant WMD red herrings in Iraq were checkmated by BJ&A.

which one, that the Kuwaiti border patrol had stopped US military trucks from taking unmarked barrels into Iraq in 2003 or 2004. Can't find the damn link now.

I wonder how many other "barrels" have been planted by the US in other "Axis of Evil" countries in anticipation of more invasions?

Traitors among us and they are running the country into the ground.

June 20, 2003

A DOD whistleblower reportedly details an attempt by a covert U.S. team to plant weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The team was said to have been later killed by friendly fire due to CIA incompetence.

Pentagon Whistleblower Reveals CIA/ DoD Fiascos

IN a world exclusive, Al Martin Raw.com has published a news story about a Department of Defense whistleblower who has revealed that a US covert operations team had planted "Weapons of Mass Destruction" (WMDs) in Iraq -- then "lost" them when the team was killed by so-called "friendly fire."

The Pentagon whistleblower, Nelda Rogers, is a 28-year veteran debriefer for the Defense Department. She has become so concerned for her safety that she decided to tell the story about this latest CIA-military fiasco in Iraq.

According to Al Martin Raw.com, "Ms.Rogers is number two in the chain of command within this DoD special intelligence office. This is a ten-person debriefing unit within the central debriefing office for the Department of Defense.

37. The Aspens are all connected by the roots.
and just like the Aspens, we only see what's on the surface but all of these incidents are connected. There is one faction perpetrating these incidents and another trying to stop them.

What we have is a covert war going on between different elements within the US Government with foreign elements and contractor thrown in. A very dangerous brew.

64. Who's paying attention?
"This was a contingent of CIA/ DoD operatives, but it was really the CIA that bungled it, Ms. Rogers said. They were relying on the CIA's ability to organize an effort to seize these assets and to be able to extract these assets because the CIA claimed it had resources on the ground within the Iraqi army and the Iraqi government who had been paid. That turned out to be completely bogus. As usual."

"CIA people were supposed to be handling it," Martin continues. "They had a special 'black (unmarked) aircraft to fly it out. But none of that happened because the regular US Army showed up, stumbled onto it and everyone involved had to scramble.

These new Iraqi "Asset Seizures" go directly to the New US Ruling Junta. The US Viceroy in Iraq Paul Bremer is reportedly drinking Saddam Hussein's $2,000 a bottle Napoleon era brandy, smoking his expensive Davidoff cigars and he has even furnished his Baghdad office with Saddam's Napoleon era antique furniture

The Iraq Debacle du Jour has evidently been extensively documented by the DIA debriefing teams with "extensive tape recordings of interviews with the Iraqi returnees, the covert operatives (as well as their affidavits)."

Al Martin Raw.com has dubbed this "Operation Skim Iraq."

Halliburton Sold Nuclear Triggers to Libya
13-Apr-03
Halliburton

SocialFunds.com writes, "Halliburton pleaded guilty in 1995 to criminal charges of violating a U.S. ban on exports to Libya by selling Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi six pulse neutron generators between 1987 and 1989. These devices fall into the dual use category: in addition to functioning as oil- and gas-well survey tools, they can be used to detonate nuclear weapons." So how soon will Cheney decide to send US troops to destroy the triggers his company illegally provided?

66. Pulse Neutron Generators, so what's the big deal?
To most people, it doesn't mean much but to folks that design nuclear weapons it's a big deal and selling that technology gives away some very vital information on how to make lightweight warheads like those that might be launched with a ballistic missile.
A lot of people know how to make the bomb and with enough Plutonium or enriched Uranium, a rudimentary weapon can be built without any sophisticated equipment. The real crown jewels are how to make a warhead lightweight and use the least amount of fissile material per warhead.

25. Cheney's private sector career:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Cheney#Private_sector_career

Private sector career

With Democrats returning to the White House in January 1993, Cheney left the Department of Defense and joined the American Enterprise Institute. From 1995 until 2000, he served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Halliburton, a Fortune 500 company and market leader in the energy sector. Under Cheney's tenure, the number of Halliburton subsidiaries in offshore tax havens increased from 9 to 44. Meanwhile, Halliburton went from paying $302 million in company taxes in 1998 to overpaying taxes by $85 million and getting a refund of that amount in 1999. As CEO of Halliburton, Cheney lobbied to lift U.S. sanctions against Iran and Libya, saying they hurt business and failed to stop terrorism. He also sat on the Board of Directors of Procter & Gamble, Union Pacific, and EDS.

In 1997, he, along with Donald Rumsfeld and others, founded the "Project for the New American Century," a think tank whose self-stated goal is to "promote American global leadership". He was also part of the board of adviser of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) before becoming Vice President.

It all fits right in......

April 10, 2006

Ray McGovern works with Tell the Word, the publishing arm of the ecumenical Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC. A 27-year veteran of the CIA, he is co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity.

When you invest so much effort into tangling the web—in this case, corrupting intelligence analysis in the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq—it becomes hard to know when to stop. Vice President Dick Cheney went to inordinate lengths, including 10 visits to CIA headquarters, to ensure that that crucial NIE on weapons of mass destruction was alarmist enough to scare Congress into authorizing war. And when the evidence turned out to be flimsy, Cheney had a back-up plan: The CIA made me do it.

Ever since their exaggerated claims about Iraq’s possession of WMD turned out to be baseless, the Bush administration’s defense has rested on blaming the government’s intelligence analysts. But one of the great revelations from Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s court filing last week is more evidence that the White House—not the CIA—distorted intelligence on Iraq. It was then-chief of staff I. Lewis Libby, acting on orders from Cheney, who presented evidence of Iraq seeking nuclear weapons material to reporters as a “key judgment” from the NIE, when in fact it was a subject of debate in the intelligence community.

The White House plan to scapegoat the intelligence community about Iraq—aided by eager-to-please CIA Director George Tenet—worked beautifully. But only for a while. The plan faltered once it became clear there were no WMD and former Ambassador Joseph Wilson blew the whistle on the centerpiece report used to deceive Congress and conjure up the specter of a mushroom cloud. That report conveyed the cockamamie story about Iraq seeking uranium in the African country of Niger, in which Cheney took uncommon interest.

snip

Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald, however, has an independent bent—plus the authority to look these aspects of the litany of leaks. I’ll be he has a good idea of who orchestrated the forgery. Indeed, I will not be surprised if the operation is eventually be traced back to the office of the vice president.

It's definitely malignant and growing. On Cheney, it looks like it's terminal. Champagne will be opened liberally when that day comes!

44. Robertpaulson, could Fitzgerald's investigation be a twofer?
(1) The manufacturing of yellowcake evidence to justify this illegal and elective war in Iraq?
(2) The need to out Plame by Cheney/Rumsfield because of her access to intelligence into the illegal sales of dual use components in the 90s?

Seems that this whole investigation cannot be founded on a simply perjury/obstruction of justice charge. There must be a significant, albeit unnamed agenda by the prosecutor to expose a much greater underlying crime(s) than what we have seen to date.

It's amazing that (1) and (2) could have 2 common parties involved....the Cheneys and the Wilsons.

Or the Plame/AIPAC scandal, depending on your preference, but like Iran/Contra this case is definitely worthy of a hyphenate. Just read between the lines of this great article:

The Most Important Criminal Case in American History
by James Moore

snip

We may stand witness to a definitive American moment of democracy. The son of a New York doorman probably has in his hands, in many ways, the fate of the republic. Because far too many of us know and are aware of the crimes committed by our government in our name, we are unlikely to settle for a handful of minor indictments of bureaucrats. The last thing most of us believe in is the rule of law. We do not trust our government or the people we have elected but our constitution is still very much alive and we choose to believe that destiny has placed Patrick Fitzgerald at this time and this place in our history to save us from the people we elected. If the law cannot get to the truth of what has happened to the American people under the Bush administration, then we all may begin to hear the early death rattles of history’s greatest democracy.

Fortunately, there are good signs. Fitzgerald has reportedly asked for a copy of the Italian government’s investigation into the break-in of the Niger embassy in Rome and the source of the forged documents. The blatantly fake papers, which purported to show that Saddam Hussein had cut a deal to get yellowcake uranium from Niger, turned up after a December 2001 meeting in Rome involving neo-con Michael Ledeen, Larry Franklin, Harold Rhodes, and Niccolo Pollari, the head of Italy’s intelligence agency SISMI, and Antonio Martino, the Italian defense minister.

snip

The other American attendees at Ledeen’s Roman Holiday are also worthy of scrutiny. Larry Franklin was recently arrested for leaking classified US government information to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Ledeen sprang quickly to his defense but Franklin faces prosecution next year and is most probably cooperating with prosecutor Fitzgerald. Harold Rhode, the other American actor in this tragicomic affair, worked the Office of Special Plans (OSP) at the Department of Defense for Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Characterized as a “counter-intelligence shop,” OSP simply interpreted intelligence in a manner that fit the need for evidence that Iraq had WMD. If the CIA gathered data that said otherwise, OSP analyzed it differently or ignored the facts and then reported to the vice president precisely what he wanted to hear. Rhode also was the liaison between Ahmed Chalabi, the convicted embezzler the Bush administration was using to feed information to them and Judy Miller about the distortions and lies required to fuel the rush to war.

Also, check out this interview today with Larisa Alexandrovna. Here's a great snip:

LA: I bumped into it - for sure - because some of the players overlap. Let's back up a bit. Remember what I said earlier about 'factions' and 'cookie-making-companies' - in a way, they are like competing mafia families. When Sibel was working as an FBI translator, she happened to get a window into one of these factions - and she has direct, first-hand knowledge of these things - so she can talk about those things as a direct source (well, she could if she wasn't gagged). Since then and separate from her own first hand knowledge - from what I understand - she's learned a lot about what may be related and how things may overlap. That said, her direct first hand knowledge is what she can speak to with any certainty (if she wasn't gagged) and in that regard, she is seeing one faction that overlaps in some ways with Brewster Jennings, but not with Plame or Plame’s team per se. There are other similar factions which she has learnt about since, which could be working together, but may also not be related at all. It is simply hard to tell because now we are talking about secondary or even tertiary information. No doubt there are factions working together, that is absolutely visible of course. But I think if you want to understand why Sibel is gagged, you need to stick to her own first hand account because that is all that she can say for sure (if she were not gagged) is to her knowledge true. So we need to keep those things separate, because it helps us understand the situation a little better, not just Sibel’s findings, but also how her story fits into other stories, if there is an overlap that is.

But to make a longer answer even longer (laughs) yes, there is some overlap in my reporting on Plame and her story. There are people who overlap - and some of them overlap simply because of where they work - or who they are in general - but they aren't necessarily specifically involved or related to all of the various threads - or even any of the other threads other than her own.

The problem that some people have in trying to understand the story is that people assume that there is, in some sense, a unifying theory of everything - but that's not the case. As result, people try to make all the pieces of information that they have fit into the one storyline. So this is where things get tricky - because people assume the Brewster Jennings and Valerie Plame are one and the same thing - and that events in Turkey are exactly related to Plame or that somehow the Plame leak is in and of itself a holy grail to answering the Iraq questions. That is just not the case, it is not that neat and orderly.

For example, I've seen it reported about Turkey and certain components being shipped to UAE, in the form of switches, which is true, that transaction did occur. But then the article conflates Plame’s outing with that transaction and that is not true, not at least from what I have been able to verify and see. On the other hand, could the transaction of the switches from Turkey to the UAE be related to Brewster Jennings? Possibly, but there is not enough to confirm that. In other words, you have a story (and I am sorry, but I cannot remember where the hell I read that) that has factual pieces in it but attempts to conflate them to solve a host of unrelated issues. It is also natural to want to make all the parts fit, but they do not. It is not that simple.

To clarify, I don't think Fitz is investigating Sibel. But Fitz, if you're reading this, it wouldn't hurt if you gave her a call!

I recall a parallel story that tied in with the outing and it involved some operation in Isreal. I think Wilson had talked about it some time ago.

I'm sure this has been covered over and over, but anyhow:

1) Haliburtons involvement with trading with the enemy
2) Brewster/Jennings foils a 'plant the WMD in Iraq' plot
3) Cut off all intelligence in that area (denigration of the CIA, wiping out BJ of years of work) so the * can make up his own script with even less contest.

I've been mulling over this information for a while now but making accusations about Cheney without having a hard connection to the events would have been counterproductive. With the latest revelations on Cheney's role in the outing, it becomes easier for people to see the connections.

Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 11:29 PM by Emit
Is there a credible source yet that specifically states what Brewster Jennings was working on?

It's difficult to find sources other than Wayne Madsen that actually connect B-J as working on Nuclear counter proliferation in countries like Iran, UAE, etc.

In your OP you state, "They were working in the UAE on Nuclear counter proliferation." But the article has no mention of B-J.

Nevertheless, it is very informative and lots can be infered here, and I am glad to see Forbes having had reported on this, so thanks for the post.

67. Thanks for assigning my reading for the week!
From the OP link:

The alleged shipper, an Israeli national named Asher Karni, was arrested in December at Denver International Airport. He awaits trial in the U.S. for conspiring to export goods without a license,

That's the arrest Sibel spoke about. There were 2 articles by a reporter, and it was the earlier one, not the one written when Karni was convicted that she pointed us to.

- - - - -

How can we claim we're worried about Iran when we're selling them the stuff?

Yet it didn't take long for U.S. products to seep through the cracks. As long as a decade ago, more than a quarter of the roughly $1 billion in American goods exported to Dubai ended up in Iran, estimates the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control, a nonproliferation advocacy group in Washington, D.C. Last year U.S. companies sold $3.4 billion worth of goods to the U.A.E.; export licenses have jumped 47% over the last five years. "When you blow off the dust, the Dubai region sometimes means Iran and Libya," says Paul DeBenedictis, chairman of the American Business Council of the Gulf Countries. . . .

In any event, earlier this year the Treasury Department reopened a 2001 inquiry into Halliburton's Iran operations and its Dubai-based partner.

http://www.forbes.com/global/2004/0419/041_print.html

One thing seems apparent to me. First we have the fact that after 9-11, little-to-nothing was done to secure the ports. Is this the reaction of a government afraid of terrorists? Second, we have stories such as this and another thread today about another Dubia deal, this one involving defense industries. It is not possible that our government is doing open arms deals and is also worried about keeping us secure from the same people having WMD. Nope, to my mind this is evidence that the government was not surprised by 9-11 or worried about random groups of al-Qaeda being able to attack the "homeland."
