Borders keep us in: am I being paranoid here?
Why has immigration suddenly become an issue? Why are people suddenly clamoring for greater border security, even shoot-to-kill orders and electrified fences? Could it be that this issue is being pushed to give an excuse for border lockdown if/when a draft starts, to prevent US citizens from fleeing?

1. Agreed
I said something similar in a thread a couple of days ago. When you build a wall, you better be sure which side of it you're on. Otherwise, you might find out that all the locks are on the other side.

2. See what happens to the American economy if the borders were closed.
It wouldn't be pretty. A certain minimum level of freedom of movement is vital in a late-stage capitalist society.

3. could be used for that - but
there are 4 ways to get around obstacles...

- over it
-- under it
--- through it
---- around it

assuming a wall is put up across the entire US/Mexico border, further assume that the wall is extremely high, buried deep, and very strong

just hop on a boat and paddle up/down the coast line (Gulf coast or Pacific coast) and find a secluded beach to land on

4. smokescreen
the rethugs and bush administration sre real good at putting up smokescreen issues that will never pass, they divert attention from real issues, this not to say that the border is not an issue, secure it,then decide a process of dealing with illegals already here, now lets get back to impeaching this mccarthyite.peace bj

5. People can't get jobs. Here are 22 million illegals working.

That's a lot of jobs. When people get desperate, they start attacking imagined enemies.

As for keeping people in - destroying the value of the dollar will do that. We won't be able to afford to leave. De-pegging the dollar to the Chinese currency will do that. Printing trillion of dollars will do that. Bankrupting a country will do that with a huge deficit. Invading other countries when you need a lot of foreign friends to keep using your money will do that if they decide not to use your money anymore. Trading oil in Euros will do that.
