A christian myself, so not trying to Diss the faith angle at all - but have been wondering about this.

Most the Mexicans I have met and talked with are catholic (I am not) and anti-abortion, anti-gay, etc. IE, from my personal experience I have seen that most are RW'ers - hard work is how to get ahead, Abortion is murder, and the party of morals is the republicans.

I have met illegals (and legals) of the opposite spectrum, but very few. While the right is whining that illegals want to come in and suck up welfare, et al, I see it as the right is picking up votes by leveraging the morals of such folk.

I wonder too how would we frame the debate on this if we asked 'should we allow 11 million illegal catholics' to become legal, voting, citizens?

Maybe it is not about color - but about faith?

1. I've been thinking about this for a couple of days.
The fundies seem to be all up in arms over "illegal immigration". I have been wondering, if most of the "illegals" were fundie Christians, would the Republican fundies be so up in the air about it? I don't think so. Also, fundie Christians hate Catholics. It doesn't matter that the Catholic Church teaches most of the same brand of moralism that the fundies do; it is a matter of expansion possibilities. Most Catholics are just not in the market for fundie conversion - they are a dead pool. Also, as Catholics become more educated and affluent they become more "liberal" in their attitudes. This is shown in most surveys. I think that most of the opposition to "illegals" is based on race and religion and nothing much else...

isn't the problem the TENTH OF MILLIONS of Protestant right-wingers, anti-abortion, anti-gay etc already detaining power in all structures of American society, to the level that they can pass laws banning abortion on state-level ? or even banning an ad...
