This doesn't happen every time, but I've seen so many wonderful threads fall into oblivion because everyone has an opinion (good thing), but too few people actually introspect and respond to the intent of the OP (Original Post).
Can we do better? Are our phones as screwed up as in Congress -- where the mouthpiece works fine ...but the ear-piece is screwed?
I knew that, that's why you haven't heard anything from me lately. ;) Just to be on the safe side though, avoid anyone today carrying a catcher's mitt and a pail of water. I see grave misfortune if you don't!
10. Listening is an art form that seems to be sliding into oblivion. Actually
on a board this size I figure I'm lucky if I get any response at all. ;)
As for "listening" and responding to what the OP actually said... I think a good part of that is a sort of mental overload. This board is really quite big and very active so subjects often fly past at great speed. I believe what happens is that many folks do quick scans, picking up snippets, missing others. They then respond to what they think is being said but sometimes sadly miss the sometimes rather subtle nuances in what is actually being said.
That said... considering the size and activity level of this board and that there are many here that have very active lives offline... I'm actually very impressed that many DUers do "listen" and "get" what folks are saying... or at least truly seem to *try*. B-)
