A brief tax-time thought.
In 2005, I lived half the year in D.C. and half the year in Virginia.

In "red" Virginia, I owe over $500 in taxes.
In "blue" D.C., I am getting a $1,000 refund.

How's that tax-cut economy working out for the rest of you who make 30K or so?

1. We do well in Mississippi
We adjust my wife's tax payment so she pays slightly more each year than owed to ensure we don't end up having to write a check and we get a few bucks back ($900.00) after we send in our tax return. My military retirement is not subject to state tax. I know many don't like the fact that many like us pay more than we owe but I have no desire to write a check to the state in Mar/Apr. I did that for too many years back in the good old days of the 90's when we made money hand over fist from the stock market. Capitol gains kicked our ass but our bottom line was sweet.

2. No state tax here...
...but the feds regularly get us. Might have something to do with the fact that I refuse to pay quarterlies on my self-employment income.

3. Doesn't really mean much
In VA, you under withheld.
In DC, you over withheld.

In WA, I owe nothing.... We don't have a Income Tax.

4. Was the same job & same amount for both halves of the year :P
I know nothing about taxes. I just thought it was amusing.
