went to a Utah Moms party tonight
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 12:46 AM by helderheid
Quite the mix of Mormon and non-Mormon, Republicans and Democrats. We joked about sex toys and booze - we talked about our kids' achievements - I showed the husband of one of my mom friends (both Mormon and Republican and a Marine :patriot:) the hill article and he congratulated me - still made sure to say he was a Republican but we high fived on loving America.

The only thing that struck me as sad was his wife was asked by a liberal mom friend if she thought * was a moron. Her answer was she didn't know and acted like she didn't care. I am only hoping she was being polite because if she really doesn't know or care, it's sad.

Nonetheless, it was a fun night. It was also a reminder that the Republicans are not the enemy - it's the corporate influence on our politics and media that is the real enemy.

Edited to add I put the patriot smiley next to the word Marine - not Republican or Mormon. :) I support the troops - I WANT THEM HOME IN ONE PIECE NOW!

1. Sounds interesting --
I have no mom friends, and none of our couple friends have children... It's tough.

We're pretty young and none of our friends are "there" yet.

Anyway, sounds like a pretty fun time.

:patriot:

2. Reid is a Mormon which is a highlight
But mostly Utah and Idaho Mormons just vote GOP. They've never forgiven the democrats for forcing them to sign an agreement that they would end polygamy, in order to vote.

Really strange but 99.8% of Idahoan Mormons vote GOP.

4. It's a stereotype that is changing here. Half of the Dem Party State
Officers are devote Mormons.

3. She was probably being polite...&, perhaps, outnumbered?
Isn't it nice to know that it's becoming more & more obvious that we were right all along? It's hard for a lot of people to admit that they were wrong.

15. Excellent! That means she was probably embarrassed or ashamed.
I love these personal account stories!

Btw, helderheid, you're one heck of a lady for coordinating the Helen Thomas roses project. I wish I could have contributed, but I sure enjoyed watching your progress & reading the articles of recognition to you & the other DU volunteers/contributors.

7. There is a fascinating article that relates to "republicans...
are not the enemy" in the Election Reform forum, by Land Shark. I know you have read it, helderheid, but perhaps others here have not. It is a bit of a long read, but something that is important and sticks in your mind. I recommend it to all: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=420067&mesg_id=420067

9. See...I have to disagree...
people who continue to vote republican despite everything we have seen over the last 6 years...they are the enemy in my book. If they are willingly and knowingly keeping these people in power then they are the enemy. And frankly, the ones who keep voting for them, despite it not being in their economic interest, because they are anti-choice or anti-gay...they are really my enemy.

10. But they aren't. They are ignorant, sure but not the enemy. Their
culture and the teevee are telling them "the truth" and they are sleeping. It's sad to be sure but these people I hung out with last night are good people. They love their family, their church, their community. They just don't know better. Our culture teaches us that one should never bring up politics because it's rude to do so. Well, that surely keeps public debate to a minimum. I say if we can be respectful of each other, it is our obligation to bring up politics. One cannot enlighten someone whom they see as their enemy. Again, I say it is corporate media, big business and churches sleeping together, and big money in politics that are our true enemies.

11. We will have to agree to disagree on this
Many years ago I believed like you do. But with all the information available on what the rethugs are up to...the only way to be ignorant nowadays is to chose to be ignorant. The fact of corporate media, big business and churches in bed together and the influence of big money politics isn't some huge secret. Yet these people continue to support the current system. And too damn often they accept corporate serfdom because at least them uppity women won't be able to get an abortion and those evil gays won't be able to get married. They accept the death of democracy because democracy is less important to them than their fear and hatred.

sorry...got a giggle from that last comment given how much time I've spent in the immigration threads the last few days. But I always feel better when I run into someone who can disagree without being disagreeable. :yourock: I think you were exactly the person I needed to run into today.
